We've never seen a pro lay up on No. 12 before ...

But there's a first time for everything, and on Thursday, 2025 Japan Open winner Naoyuki Kataoka delivered exactly that with a shanked tee shot on the par-3 12th that failed to reach Rae's Creek.

Of course, Kataoka didn't intentionally play it short of the water, but his tee shot functioned much like a lay-up would have. From there, the 28-year-old pitched short of the green, chipped to seven feet and made his putt for a one-of-a-kind bogey.
