Golf fans have become a bit numb to the exponential increases to prize money payouts in men’s professional golf.
That risks overlooking the notable leaps that are also taking place in the women’s game. On Tuesday, Chevron Championship officials announced its 2026 purse will be $9 million. That’s up $1 million from a year ago and a staggering $5.9 million since Chevron started sponsoring the major in 2022. This year’s winner will make $1.35 million. For context: When Amy Alcott won in 1988 (and made the first leap into Poppie’s Pond), she earned $80K from a $500,000 purse. Yes, the men’s majors are offering roughly double the amount of the women’s, so there is room for more growth. Even so, progress is being made.
