It was a rough return for Michelle Wie West.

Do we roll our eyes or pat her on the back for putting herself in a tough spot? The 36-year-old host of the Mizuho Americas Open gave herself a sponsor’s exemption despite not competing for nearly three years, and, in difficult conditions, she struggled badly, shooting 18 over (82-80). This was her prep for the U.S. Women’s Open at Riviera next month, and she knows what she’s got to work on to break 80 at Hogan’s Alley: short game. Wie West missed 19 of 36 greens and still needed 69 total putts. She can take heart in this: Mountain Ridge played so hard that two strong players, Chizzy Iwai and Lottie Woad, shot 11 over and 13 over, respectively.
