That’s the argument made by Golf Digest reader Steven Bradley in response to our MythBusters test on the effects of gripping down on the club. Bradley writes…
“I’d suggest the greater myth is that there is such a thing as a ‘perfect yardage.’ I’ve been a scratch or better player since I was a kid (30 years now) and have rarely seen an amateur who needed to worry much about yardage. You’d need to be able to consistently make flush contact for it to even be relevant.”
He’s got a point. What difference does gripping down make when you could flush or duff a shot? Steven’s insight reinforces a conclusion we made in a previous MythBusters test which showed that for mid-handicaps, taking more club and swinging easy can produce more consistent, flush contact.
