One of the Houston Open’s marquee attractions is not a tour pro.

That would be 18-year-old Mason Howell, one of the hottest names in amateur golf. Howell, who qualified for last year’s U.S. Open at Oakmont, captured the U.S. Amateur title last summer at Olympic Club with a 7-and-6 victory in the championship match, becoming the third-youngest winner of the USGA's oldest event … a spot previously held by Tiger Woods. Along with this week at Memorial Park, fans will get to see Howell at Augusta National, as the U.S. Am earned him a spot into the Masters. Howell is committed to play for the University of Georgia next year.
