Confidence can be a double-edged sword.
This quote from Matt Fitzpatrick earlier today is a fascinating window into how the game’s elite manage their mental approach: “The key is obviously to have as low expectations as possible and as high of confidence as possible,” he said.
Fitzpatrick says he’s as confident as he’s ever been at the Masters but insists that doesn’t mean he will play well. As our Sam Weinman has written about, you need confidence to succeed, but confidence can breed the expectation that you are supposed to succeed, which ultimately harms performance. Having one without the other is the challenge that the world’s best work to manage.
