A disproportionate amount of the best golf in the U.S. is private.

Only 15 public-access courses rank inside our list of America’s 100 Greatest Courses, even though three out of every four facilities in the U.S. are open to the public. The quality isn’t there. Why don’t more clubs adapt what the elite courses of the U.K. do, opening its doors to the public on a limited basis? We saw The Lido open with a “welcoming private club” model a few years ago to great success. Now two of the guys behind The Lido, Michael Keiser Jr. (son of Mike Keiser, Bandon Dunes creator) and Baker Thompson, are bringing their approach to expand playing possibilities at Broomsedge, one of the hot new clubs to open in South Carolina. If you're a golf traveler, it's incredibly exciting news.
