Overview
As an unapologetic Pete Dye fan, I know the most economical way to understand and appreciate Dye's genius is to simply play Brickyard Crossing, the course associated with the Indianapolis Speedway. There are four holes on the infield of the race track that provide a complete portfolio of his evolving design style. The par-3 seventh plays to a massive Seth Raynor-styled green perched some 10 feet high. The par-4 eighth is a boomerang par 4 along a lake that brings to mind the eighth at Crooked Stick, with a long rippled green a salute to Alister MacKenzie. The par-4 ninth is peppered with 10 pot bunkers in the right rough, eight more in the left. The short par-4 tenth, a dogleg wrapped around a long flat waste bunker down the left side, is a hole is full of Dye illusions. None of the four holes look or play anything like the other three, which makes it not only challenging but fun as you analyze and conquer. “Fun course where 4 holes are inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway...although 3 of the holes inside the track are below average from a design standpoint. Memorable holes include 4, 8, 11, and 14-18. Currently they are just finishing up on a bunker restoration on 6 bunkers where they are using stacked synthetic sod that will ease maintenance...according to pro original bunkers in these locations were stacked sod and maintenance allowed them to erode over the years. Routing is a bit odd in that you go backwards 50-100 yards towards the hole you just played to get to tee boxes. Some interesting green complexes that allow for some very challenging pin positions. Design variety suffers a bit as I seemingly hit the same club on 3 of the 4 par 3's and most holes are flat w/ a few playing slightly downhill....no holes played uphill. At times you can be playing and see/hear race cars practicing."
