“Dramatic setting with something like 1000 feet between the high and low points in basically a rain forest. While a stray shot results in a lost ball more often than not, this is a seriously fun course, and not just because of the views toward the ocean. Conditioning was spotty a few years ago, in case that matters."

“This is one of the hilliest courses I've ever played. Pulling the right club was an adventure. It is about 1500 feet above the ocean. The views were just stunning. The fairways were in good condition, but the greens were a little stressed. The course is undergoing some renovations. Many of the sand bunkers are being changed to grass bunkers. I think it is a good move for them. Sand bunkers are expensive to maintain. Makalei is very much a local's course. I am glad they have such a nice place to play. This is also a peacock's playground. They are everywhere."

“Decent public course above Kona. Lots of trees and some elevation change. Known for the wild peacocks that inhabit the course."

“Surprisingly cheap for Hawaii, this course is high up on the side of the volcano. Decidedly not walkable with huge elevation changes, lots of blind shots can bring pace of play to a crawl, but worth a look if you want to get away from the beach."
