Overview

Back when Golf Digest's named the Pine Barrens Course at World Woods' America's Best New Resort Course of 1994, most panelists said the layout, carved from a sand-based pine plantation, compared favorably to Pine Valley, with similar belts of sand and vegetation lining each hole. Pine Barrens also has some canyons of sand that jut into fairways and pose risks and rewards. The Pine Barrens Course was ranked among America's 100 Greatest from 1999 until 2003.

“Plays very long but wide and forgiving. There are a lot of mid length dog leg right holes that also play downhill. Bunkers are played natural here...ie very little raking or maintenance. 12 has a double green, long par 4 where 2 green options are 50 yds apart...similar to what you might see in Japan or at the hole at Pine Valley w/ the double green. Great value on this course for those traveling to the area but a little hard to get to w/ location"

“World Woods, while not having a state of the art clubhouse by any means (needs improvement), has everything else you'd want out of a public golf facility. An incredible range, putting green, putting course and practice facility are available for free and both pre/post round. Two courses are present, but Pine Barrens is the more recognized 18. The course is not FL style at all (read limited water) but rather plays like a NC course with pines and waste areas lining the fairways. The course was also in superb condition and I'd recommend play to anybody in the area."

“I cannot believe this is a public course. It is a bit remote, but easily accessible from all the big cities in central Florida. The course has wonderful greens with brilliant bunkering throughout. The course goes through the pine trees and makes you feel more like you are in North Carolina. This course has more undulation than you typically see in Florida. It is a great amount of fun to play and I can't wait to get back."

“Pure golf in rolling wooded land with no houses or noise anywhere. Course represents Pine Valley with lots of waste land, carries over sand and island greens. Also has wonderful practice area and second course, Rolling Oaks that is built to represent Augusta National. One of the best public access golf experiences in the US and prices are reasonable."

“Consider this to be one of Fazio’s better designs in part because it doesn’t feel like some of his other typical work. There are still some of his deep greenside bunkers lurking but the overall feel doesn’t seem like his typical design. While most people compare the look of it to Pine Valley, I think it has more of a Pinehurst area feel to it. Either way it’s the type of golf course you aren’t used to seeing in Florida. Water can only be seen on one hole (par 3 3rd), the rest of the course is played through the sandy scrub and pines found in the area. It has a unique routing that really winds throughout the property in circles of 5-6 holes connecting at the 1st green, 7th tee, 12th tee and 18th tee. I enjoy the variety with the par 3’s where they play 4 different distances where you will usually use 4 different clubs ranging from a long iron at the 16th to a 9 iron wedge on the 3rd. The clubhouse and food is nothing to brag about, but there is a large putting course and 9 hole par 3 on property as well. To go along with the other 18 hole course Rolling Oaks. Usually October through April are the best months to encounter World Woods. I have played it in the summer and encountered some conditioning issues in previous summers."

“This is a tribute to Pine Valley. It doesn't quite measure up, but it is strong and demanding. The clubhouse is a bit spartan but the course is exceptional, the practice area is excellent, and has one of the really good short par fours anywhere."

“Great piece of property and solid track! World Woods is a perfect spot for destination golf. It is a nice drive through the Florida hill country to get there. Stop by the Coney Island Drive Inn in Brooksville after. Supposedly Elvis ate there 50 years ago."

“World Woods and it's two courses are simply the best value of golf in Florida. Typically $120 to play 36 on any given day on two great Fazio designs. Pine Barrens is the gem of the two courses but Rolling Oaks isnt far behind. The turf is good not great and the greens are good but only run 8.5 because of the undulation. Every hole is unique; most tree lined. The clubhouse is unassuming and small and the back deck hasn't been painted in 25 years but it doesn't matter because its all about two great courses. An absolute must if visiting the area! I rate it a 4.5 because of the value!"
