OVERVIEW SWING THOUGHTS

OVERVIEW

Student Adam Chaitin, a 12-handicapper, is struggling to make consistent contact on his iron shots. Teacher Jason Birnbaum offers several adjustments to get him hitting down and compressing the ball.

SWING THOUGHTS

Start the club back with your arms and body together
Keep the club in front of your body on the takeaway
To groove good positions, practice swinging in slow motion
For solid irons, shift to your front foot coming down
With irons, feel your center in front of the ball at impact

OVERVIEW SWING THOUGHTS

OVERVIEW

Teacher Jason Birnbaum helps 12-handicapper Adam Chaitin check and adjust his alignment on full swings. They also work on hybrid shots, specifically how to set up and swing for a higher, longer carry.

SWING THOUGHTS

Start your setup from behind the ball to establish a target line
Aim the clubface first, then align your body parallel to the target line
To simplify aim, use an intermediate target on your intended line
With a hybrid, set up and swing like you do for a middle iron
For hybrids, don’t dig the leading edge; hit the ground with the club’s sole
To fix a driver slice, try aligning your shoulders farther right
Lesson 3: Driving
3 Lesson 3: Driving
  • How to pre-set perfect impact with the driver
  • Mastering clubface position for straighter shots
  • Optimizing launch for more carry distance
  • Aiming farther right (it’s no typo) to stop slices

OVERVIEW SWING THOUGHTS

OVERVIEW

In this last segment, Jason Birnbaum shows student Adam Chaitin why his drives are going right. Fixes include a posture tip and monitoring the clubface on the backswing. Jason also discusses common slicer issues.

SWING THOUGHTS

Tilt your front shoulder higher to pre-set an upswing strike
Let the clubface rotate to “toe up” at halfway back
With the driver, load into your trail foot on the backswing
On driver swings, turn your upper body behind the ball
Deliver the driver with a natural release by staying behind the ball
To prevent a slice, keep the lead wrist flat on the backswing
Swing out to the right to avoid putting slice spin on the ball
