OVERVIEW

If you’re like most golfers, you really want to shoot lower scores but don’t have a ton of time to work on your game. A good way to make the most of your limited practice time is to sharpen your short game, from 50 yards out all the way to the cup. This is where you can save strokes the fastest. In this first video, Kevin Smeltz, one of Golf Digest’s Best Teachers in Florida, offers a series of lessons on improving your performance on the greens.

SWING THOUGHTS

Focus on the pace of your putts; distance control is more important than line
email
To control distance on the greens, strive for an even rhythm to your stroke

Don’t try to accelerate the putterhead through the ball; let it swing

Make sure the putterface is square at address, and return it square at impact

DRILLS

Sizing Your Stroke

  • Place three tees in a line on the green, equal distance apart: one where the ball will be, one representing the length of the backstroke, one for the length of the finish.
  • Practice making a rhythmic stroke, starting at the middle tee, then swinging the putterhead back to the first tee and through to the third tee.
  • For longer putts, place the outside tees farther apart—the three tees still equidistant from one another—and stroke some putts, back to the first tee and through to the third.

Putterface Control

  • Slide a business card under your right thumb as you grip the club (traditional grip).
  • In the setup, make sure the business card is pointing to the target.
  • Make some strokes, checking that the card returns to square at impact.
  • If you hit with an open face, the card will point right; hit with a closed face, and it’ll point left.
