Overview
Pearl At Kalauao, formerly known as Pearl Country Club, was designed in 1967 by Japanese architect Akira Sato and owned until recently by the Honda Motor Company. The course had seen virtually no upgrades since opening and was struggling agronomically with outdated irrigation and contaminated grasses until a 2023 remodel by architect Kevin Ramsay of Golfplan, an architecture firm that works extensively throughout Asia. In addition to upgrading the irrigation and drainage, the design team focused on reimagining the green complexes to develop a wide array of hole locations and installing fairway cut surrounds to increase recovery options. Bunkers were also rebuilt and added in strategic locations. The public-access design fans out over a hilly, natural property punctuated with distinctive Monkey Pod trees and is convenient to downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, making it a popular destination for residents and visitors.

“Wild topography and movement and many solid golf holes. Very difficult to walk . Greens are very firm since they are relatively new but roll nicely. Some great views on the back nine. A lot of fun to play."

“Wild topography. Essentially no one walks except the college kids and they don't do it all the time. Some punishing hikes from green to tee. Very thoughtful renovation. The greens are outstanding with lots of variety. No two are alike. A lot of good golf holes although 9 and 18 are virtual copies on one another. Since the course is just one year from completion the greens are very firm and non receptive but roll very nicely. Some great views on the back nine."

“The course refresh was greens and bunkers only. Tee boxes are in a serious need of redo. Not sure what the course designer was thinking with the remodel of 10 green? The 12th green is also suspect. The basic layout of rolling terrain gives the player a varied look and the majority of the holes. Greens very firm as a result of the newness. A nice facility for the locals. The greens redesign make solid putting a necessity to score well."
