Overview
It’s on the edge of Tinsel Town, but the architecture of the North Course at Los Angeles Country Club has been solid gold ever since its 2010 restoration by architect Gil Hanse and partner Jim Wagner. It matters not that Hanse’s team didn’t replicate the bunkering style of original architect George C. Thomas, but rather the more visually exciting style of Thomas’ associate, William P. Bell. The first nine plays rustically up and down a shallow canyon with holes switching back and forth across a dry barranca, and the second nine loops across a more spacious upland section with one par 3 (the 11th) that can stretch to nearly 300 yards and another (the 15th) that often plays just 90 yards. The hole strategies reinstituted by Hanse provided an intriguing examination when LACC's North course hosted the 2023 U.S. Open as Wyndham Clark beat Rory McIlroy by a stroke.

“* No rollout in the fairways which added yardage to the card. The course played difficult especially on the longer yardage par 4's at 2, 4 & 13 which all play uphill into the wind. 3/5 par 3's played over 200yds on the card. Need to hit the ball close to the hole for birdie looks. * 2/3 par 5's play in the same direction. Each par 3 is played in a different direction with 2 uphill, 2 downhill and 1 flattish hole (Excellent variety here). Back bunkering used on only 2 holes. Doglegs are subtle with offset tees to create angular drives to fairways. Fairway bunkering is placed opposite hazards and are often the aiming targets off the tee."

“LACC North is a challenging, but very fair test of golf. The playing surfaces are excellent playing firm and fast throughout the course. The greens are most all very well protected and often require a highly lofted approach to hit and hold. However there are numerous banked areas to use to approach around or from the side of the green bunkering. Most greens have quite a number of plateaus and tiers offering up a myriad of hole locations on most every hole. There also are a significant number of washed out areas to carry either from the tee or more often on the approach shot. Overall, LACC North is a fantastic golf course and will test players of all abilities."

“LACC North is an incredibly fair test of Golf, presented with great George Thomas character stamped all over it. Framed by the city of LA, yet tucked with extreme privacy. The conditioning of the course plays firm, fast and true. Holes are balanced with risk and reward, and depending on your appetite for risk, you can bring a big number into play at any time. An invite you must accept if offered to visit."

“Difficult, fair and fast golf course. Playable for all, but to really score you need to place it and miss it the correct spots/sides. FAST, pure, undulating greens. Amazing piece of land with variety -- through barancca and valley on the front to plateau on the back; some really great views; great variety of short/long holes (note Par 3's from ~270 to ~130 yards; note Par 4's from ~290 to ~490 yards)"

“A lot of options off the tee for how to play each hole, near perfect conditioning and a ton of history. While the holes naturally flow through the hills, canyons and washouts, each hole is extremely distinctive in its own right. The bunkering and native grass create visually intimidating approach shots resulting in high marks for challenge."

“Incredible use of the land movement, barrancas, etc. Uphill, downhill, sidehill, short holes, long holes, and incredible walk."

“Incredibly great ambiance from the time you step foot on the first tee until you make the putt on 18. Some courses feel "special" and this is one of them. Really diverse set of holes that calls for variety of shots, but what I really liked about the course is that it's incredibly playable from the blue tees if a player is hitting decent golf shots. It's not overly penal or difficult, unless a player hits a bad shot. This merit is reflected in the challenge score. The area had recently had a bunch of rain, and there was not much rollout on fairways or the greens, and the grass was a bit in need of a bit more coverage, so this was reflected in the conditioning score. Would love to get back here when it's playing more like firm and fast as it seems the course usually plays, but the course was rated as I played it on that day."
