The best golf courses in Wyoming

For the least-populated state in the U.S., which has fewer than 65 golf courses (which is less than Iceland), Wyoming’s best golf courses are very good.

It starts with Shooting Star Golf Club, a Tom Fazio design in Teton Village, which cracked Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses list for the first time this year. It’s the first time a course in Wyoming has made our national rankings since 1968—when Old Baldy Club was a part of our 200 Toughest Golf Courses ranking.

The Snake River Sporting Club in Jackson came less than five tenths of a point from earning a spot on our list of America’s Second 100 Greatest courses. If Snake River continues to rise up in our rankings and gives the Cowboy State two courses in our national rankings, it would be a heck of a feat from this tiny golf state that could, which boasts some other great courses below.

1. (1) Shooting Star Golf Club

Built in a 250-acre meadow beneath the Grand Teton Mountains and its ski runs, Shooting Star is a core-golf layout with no housing. Its opening nine running counterclockwise around the perimeter of the site and its incoming nine clockwise through the interior. The flat land was re-sculpted into hills and valleys, then lightly planted with aspens and evergreens. Water hazards, in the form of 50 acres of lakes, ponds and a canal reshaped into a stream, affect play on 13 of the 18 holes. The club displays green sketches of all 18 in the clubhouse, each signed by Fazio, and the notations on them reflect some of Fazio’s design instructions, such as “Make sure bunker right of green feels real intimate with the stream,” “Create a flash in the left central back portion of the green to help slow down long iron shots,” and “No bunkers in front of green to entice better players to pull out driver from the tee.”

2. (2) Snake River Sporting Club

Just south of Jackson Hole, the Snake River Sporting Club is a four-season resort and residential community with a Tom Weiskopf-designed course that embraces the natural contours of the river valley. Set beside the 1,078-mile-long Snake River and surrounded by mountains, the scenic course winds through tall cottonwoods and sagebrush. The signature par-3 15th is nearly an island green, surrounded not by water but by native grasses which beautifully frame the hole against the backdrop of the Snake River.

Located in western Wyoming, Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club is a semi-private Robert Trent Jones Jr. design. Near both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, the course offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and wildlife. The relatively flat course is framed nicely by tall, native grass and stately trees. The scenic layout hosted the 1988 U.S. Amateur Public Links and the 1993 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links.

5. (4) The Golf Club At Devils Tower

Devils Tower is the tale of two courses. The first nine, built in the 1990s, wanders an open prairie section of the property. In 2005, veteran Colorado-based architect Dick Phelps and then-associate Kevin Atkinson remodeled the existing holes and added nine more pulse-racing holes on more dynamic land to the south. These play through ponderosa woodlands and skirt the edge of a high canyon wall overlooking the Belle Fourche River, and when not in the trees offer views of Devils Tower National Monument over eight miles in the distance.

6. (6) Teton Pines Resort and Golf Club

Teton Pines Resort and Golf Club was built in 1987 by Arnold Palmer Course Design. The holes flow across a level valley at the foot of the Snake River Range Mountains with lakes, streams and marshes coming into play on 14 holes. The club completed a multiyear renovation by current Palmer Course Design vice president Thad Layton in 2023, making updates and improvements, including new bunkers, throughout the course. The current ranking does not yet reflect this wiork.
