Woods fuels debate: Are golfers athletes?

December 27, 2009

When the Associated Press recently named Tiger Woods its athlete of the decade, it provoked the predictable debate about whether golfers indeed qualify as athletes.

Two particular quotes caught my attention for their polar viewpoints:

"Golf's lack of athleticism also precludes Tiger Woods from lifting the crown for the last decade," wrote Frank Malley for PA Sports.

"For athleticism, nobody was better," said Detroit Lions placekicker Jason Hanson, who in this Q&A with the Grand Rapids Press, identified Woods as his favorite athlete to watch.

Malley, incidentally, casts his vote for Lance Armstrong, who rides a bicycle.
