Why golf fans will see some familiar faces on TV at the Winter Olympics

January 15, 2014

No, Johnny Miller won't be a part of TV coverage for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. But NBC will be sending a record 84 commentators, several of whom regularly cover golf for the network.

Jimmy Roberts, who provides essays and commentary for NBC during tournaments and hosts the show "In Play With Jimmy Roberts" on Golf Channel, will work his 15th Olympics.

Dan Hicks, who usually sits opposite Miller in the booth, will serve as the lead play-by-play announcer for alpine skiing.

Terry Gannon will handle play-by-play duties for figure skating on NBCSN. Ryan Burr will be a host of NBC.com's streaming coverage, and finally, Steve Sands will make his Olympics debut as a speed skating reporter.

Kelly Tilghman, who served as a host on MSNBC during the London Summer Olympics in 2012, will not be working these Games, which run from Feb. 6-Feb. 23.

Don't worry, you won't miss these guys too much when you're watching golf. While Golf Channel will continue to carry early-round coverage, the three PGA Tour events during that span (AT&T Pebble Beach, Northern Trust Open, and the WGC-Accenture Match Play) are all being televised on weekends on CBS.
