Tom Watson says Rory McIlroy is “the guy” over Jordan Spieth and Jason Day

April 05, 2016

Tom Watson joked that the odds of making the cut in his final Masters this week are 100 to 1. But he’s much more confident in Rory McIlroy winning at Augusta National.

“He's the guy,” said Watson when asked about the best young golfers on Wednesday. “He's my pick this week. He's my pick. He's just got a tremendous talent. He hits the ball high. I think it's always been an advantage to hit the ball high on this golf course.”

The most interesting part of that statement is that Watson picked the Northern Irishman over fellow American Jordan Spieth, whom he captained at the 2014 Ryder Cup. Spieth impressed Watson that week at Gleneagles and is coming off a year in which he won two majors – including equaling Tiger Woods’ Masters scoring record – to pass McIlroy in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Watson praised Spieth along with Jason Day later in his press conference, but then went back to gushing about McIlroy.

“Rory, he can emasculate a golf course, he flat can,” Watson said.
