The year of the Cubs? Best record, play Pebble Beach on day off

August 05, 2016

We don’t yet know whether the Curse of the Billy Goat finally will be broken, but this is how good the Chicago Cubs are going: They have the best record in baseball and a group of them used a day off in Oakland on Thursday to play golf at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

The round, according to Anthony Rizzo, was set up by Jon Lester:

Joining Lester, who starts tonight for the Cubs against the A's, at Pebble Beach were Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Jake Arrieta, John Lackey, Miguel Montero, David Ross and an unidentified eighth.

This round, incidentally, occurred only a day after the Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes took heat for playing golf on the day of a game and later winding up on the disabled list.

The difference is that Cespedes had been nursing a strained quad muscle at the time. The Cubs, presumably, are all healthy and did not have a game later in the day.

It appeared they had a great time (who wouldn’t?), and in the process demonstrated again that baseball players enjoy playing golf on their days off more than golfers enjoy playing baseball on theirs.
