Sometimes, a positive number is even more positive than it first appears.

That’s one way of looking at the data regarding rounds played for August, according to Golf Datatech and PGA PerformanceTrak. Overall rounds were up compared to last August (1.6 percent according to Golf Datatech; 2.2 percent, according to PGA PerformanceTrak).

It would be easy to say this is a reflection of better weather across the United States. But according to PGA PerformanceTrak, rounds played were significantly up in August even though the number of playable days was virtually the same from last August. Rounds played were up in 33 states, and in six of those states, the number of playable days actually fell.

According to Golf Datatech, the top gainers for August were in the Midwest, including Indiana (11.1 percent increase), Missouri (8.1), Ohio (6.9) and Illinois (6.2). —Mike Stachura
