The best golf courses in New Hampshire

The five courses in this year's New Hampshire ranking are all located in the southern half of the state. The Golf Club of New England and Portsmouth Country Club are near Portsmouth, a city on the small section of Atlantic Coast between Maine and Massachusetts. The other three exhude a more traditional, secluded New England mountain feel, including the top-ranked course, Baker Hill, by the shore of Lake Sunapee and Lake Winnipesaukee near a lake of the same name.

Below you'll find our 2023-'24 ranking of the Best Golf Courses in New Hampshire.

Baker Hill sits among the New Hampshire mountains and provides a classic New England golf experience for every golfer. The course offers a great blend of uphill and downhill shots—delivering plenty of variety throughout the course. Golfers must be prepared to work the ball both ways off the tee as Rees Jones provides an excellent mix of right to left and left to right holes. The greens feel tucked into the trees, forcing accuracy on the approach. The bunkers are some of the most difficult in the region, some are nearly six feet deep and all are lined with fescue. One of the most unique quirks is a call back to North Berwick, as a stone wall runs along 1, 4, 8-13, 16 & 18.

Manchester Country Club’s strength comes in its classic, great routing by Donald Ross. Like so many of his designs, Manchester’s green complexes provide much of the character—with many distinct sections and pronounced, bold contours. The back nine is one of the finest in the region with strong variety and dramatic landforms, including the 17th, which has a creek running through the fairway in the run up to the green. The course is tremendously fun and is yet another great showcase of what made Ross so special.
