The top story at the Travelers Championship on Friday involved a player who isn't in the field: Tiger Woods. "This might not be the best thing to say but every time he's in the field the event is different.The whole tour needs Tiger," Keegan Bradley said in response to Woods' announcement that he would return to competitive golf next week. Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is renowned for barking orders at the line of scrimmage, but on the golf course? Through golf is how he introduces new players to how it will be on the football field, according to this story by Kevin Clark in the Wall Street Journal.
"Lucy Li will not linger on the weekend, but she clearly left her mark on the U.S. Women's Open," Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle writes of the 11-year-old who became the youngest ever to play in the U.S. Women's Open.
The competition to attract players is intense among the respective tournaments on the PGA Tour. The Travelers Championship tends to seek out top amateurs making their professional debuts the week following the U.S. Open. This year four were in the field: Patrick Rodgers, Cameron Wilson, Oliver Goss, and Bobby Wyatt. Michael Whitmer has the story in the Boston Globe.
"It has been more than 60 years since the Open was played here, and it's been too long," R&A Chief Executive Peter Dawson said regarding the announcement last week that the British Open will return to Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press has the story.
