UPDATE: This photo of TPC Sawgrass’ famed island green underwater is from 2012, Hurricane Matthew's damages still being assessed

October 07, 2016

On Friday, multiple reports surfaced that TPC Sawgrass' famed island green was nearly underwater thanks to Hurricane Matthew. It turns out, those reports were misled by an old photo of the course's 17th hole. Here is what Action News Jacksonville reporter Erica Burnett tweeted:

And here’s a screenshot from a local CBS broadcast sent to us at around 5 p.m.

On Friday night, TPC Sawgrass and a PGA Tour employee informed us that the photo was actually from 2012 during Tropical Storm Debby. The club also said it would provide "updates on the course soon." The club also tweeted "conditions have not allowed our team to assess any damages."

On Thursday morning, the site of the Players Championship announced it was closing:

Earlier this week, the Web.com Tour Championship, which was to be played at nearby Atlantic Beach Country Club, was cancelled.

Hopefully, TPC Sawgrass wasn't hit as hard as originally thought. We also realize Hurricane Matthew has put far more important things at risk than a golf course -- no matter how famous it is. To all of those still in the path of the storm, our thoughts are with you.
