Our memories from the U.S. Open and Oakmont have hardly faded (heck, we’ve barely had time to file our expense reports) when suddenly, the British Open is upon us, a week earlier than usual to help accommodate the Olympics in August. Twelve years removed from the last time the R&A took the Open to Scotland’s Royal Troon—where unknown Todd Hamilton stunned the golf world with his playoff win over Ernie Els—there are no shortage of storylines to ponder as we find our passports, pack our foul-weather gear and prepare for a week of fish and chips:

Will another unlikely winner emerge?

Can Dustin Johnson, fresh off his U.S. Open and WGC-Bridgestone wins, keep the momentum going and grab another major?

Is this the major that Jason Day, Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth put together four solid rounds and add to their resumes?

Might a veteran golfer running out of chances to grab an elusive major title are break through? (We’re talking about you Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood.)

Will the course and weather conditions dominate headlines?

Will Alex Myers survive a week of the forecasted wind and rain without?

All these questions—and more—are discussed by myself and my colleagues Sam Weinman, Joel Beall and Alex Myers in this week’s Golf Digest Podcast previewing the 145th British Open.
