Firestone: Jason Day leads by one

Jason Day, seeking his fourth victory of the season, will take a one-stroke lead into the weekend following a second round one-under par 69 in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, on Friday.

Day, No. 1 in the World Ranking, birdied the 16th and 17th holes, but bogeyed the 18th, and is four-under par 136, one stroke ahead of David Lingmerth of Sweden and two ahead of a threesome that includes first-round leader William McGirt.

Jordan Spieth, meanwhile, was fighting his swing for the second straight day, but his putter was unable to compensate to the degree it did in the first round. Spieth shot a one-over par 71 and trails Day by three.

“I thought the course played possibly a couple strokes tougher today,” Spieth said. “I just didn’t hit that many fairways, but held it together again to remain in a good position for the weekend.

“Hopefully it clicks here soon and we can shoot a few under on the his golf course. I feel pretty good about being in the thick of things again.”
