The best golf courses in Delaware

It's not surprising the second smallest state has a relatively small number of golf courses. Just 15 courses from Delaware qualify as candidates for Golf Digest panelists to evaluate. Also not surprising is that three of the top five courses that comprise the Delaware ranking are located in Wilmington, the state's greatest population center. Wilmington Country Club is home to courses designed by Robert Trent Jones and Dick Wilson, fierce rivals who were the two most prominent architects from the late 1940s until Wilson's death in 1965.

Perhaps the most interesting course is second-ranked Biderman, formerly the private golf course of the du Pont family. Wilson expanded it to 18 holes in the 60s, and it has remained a highly private, secretive and lightly played retreat. Andrew Green performed a renovation here in 2014.

The Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed South Course is routed among the rolling terrain of northern Delaware and provides some really good vistas of large sections of the golf course. The routing takes advantage of the terrain to produce a course with strong layout design and a variety of holes that include thoughtful short par 4s such as the 11th, challenging longer par 4s such as No. 5 and a beautiful mix of par 3s. Recent tree removal plus some tornado damage have opened up the course even more, and some bunkers were added at the corner of doglegs in an attempt to restore some shot options back to a few holes ahead of the 2022 BMW Championship, the first time the PGA Tour will host an event in Delaware.
