DEAR GOLF DIGEST, PICK ME! page 134
With the entry phase for the Golf Digest U.S. Open Contest ending on Jan. 29, our editors are now preparing to narrow down the more than 56,000 essays that have been submitted. From an air–traffic controller to a Hollywood stuntman to a former governor of Utah, golf enthusiasts far and wide are gunning for their chance to break 100 at Torrey Pines, under U.S. Open conditions, with three celebrities on NBC in June. Profiles of the finalists will be announced in our May issue and beginning March 27, the public will choose the winner during 35 days of online voting on GolfDigest.com.
IT'S NOT EASY BEING FRED page 124
One of the all–time fan favorites, Fred Couples was hardly seen on the golf course last season. He played in only six official rounds, four of them at Augusta, because of his ever–ailing back, a lack of motivation and what a friend called “a year off to work on his personal life.” Senior writer Jaime Diaz takes a look at the man behind the golfer to find out what lies ahead on and off the course in 2008 and beyond.
FINAL EXAM – JIMMIE JOHNSON page 124
NASCAR’s defending season champion is best known in the golf world as the race car driver who broke his wrist while trying to surf on a golf cart (he says “it wasn’t the smartest thing I’ve done”). In this month’s installment of the Final Exam, Jimmie Johnson gets put to the test on Tiger’s ’07 earnings, the FedEx Cup and NASCAR’s top golfer.
New to the magazine this issue, Travel Digest features editors in search of real–life experiences including the top golf destinations and packages, long golf weekends by way of the hottest new cars and interviews with people who know how to travel. This month senior travel editor Matt Ginella heads to California’s La Quinta Resort & Club for a little taste of heaven while senior writer Matt Rudy finds out what the Shelby GT500 can do on the open roads of Michigan. And the LPGA’s Juli Inkster shares her tips on how to kill time on a long flight.
