THE POWER ISSUE page 102
One of the main goals for amateur players is adding distance off the tee. Easier said than done, but in this month’s “Power Issue” we offer tips from the pros on how to hit longer drives. Lorena Ochoa, Golf Digest’s newest Playing Editor, advises, “keep everything going forward on the downswing and keep turning through the shot“ (see her full swing sequence on page 29). Be sure to also check out the results from an exclusive Golf Digest test and the newest drills that will help you to gain 40+ yards on your tee shots (page 92).
GOLF IN THE YEAR OF THE RAT page 120
Golf Digest International Editor John Barton takes a trip to China to see exactly how golf is progressing in the country of 1.3 billion people. With over 400 golf courses—a figure that is growing at 30% each year—and 80% of the world’s production of golf clubs, there is opportunity for the sport to succeed. However, there are hardly any municipal or public courses and the current government does not support the sport. Perhaps it is fitting, then, that the Year of the Rat means a year for hard work, for change and for a fresh start.
GOLF ETIQUETTE FROM THE KING page 104
Ever see Arnold Palmer throw a club after a bad shot? Unless you were at the final round of the Western Pennsylvania Junior in 1947, chances are you haven’t. That was the last time Palmer let his frustration overtake his understanding of the importance of good behavior on the golf course. From slow play to cell phone use, this month The King shares his 10 Rules for Good Golf Etiquette.
PGA CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW page 110
The 90th PGA Championship heads to Oakland Hills Country Club this summer, the first time the South Course has hosted a major since the U.S. Open in 1996. Dubbed “The Monster” by Ben Hogan, Oakland Hills has caused past players such trepidation that even Hogan himself considered laying up on the Par 3 ninth rather than trying to land a shot on the fast, sloping green. Starting August 7, the top players in the world will battle not only each other but also a course that offers no mercy.
