The New Yorker, Wired, and Golf Digest have released the findings of their recent study entitled, "C— Level Portraits: the Changing Face of the Executive Suite." The study was conducted using a two–phase approach: in depth interviews with top executives in bi–coastal markets and a quantitative study conducted on line with over 600 top executives. The study provides a comprehensive overview of the 21st century executive on everything from what they think drives success in today′s business world to how they spend their leisure time.
Highlights include:
Creativity is coveted at the top
— 2/3rds of respondents felt that more creativity is needed at the top vs. a more traditional approach and creativity is among the top ten qualities coveted for today′s leaders
Casual Friday′s changed more than just their wardrobe
— Over half agreed a more casual management style trumps a conservative approach
— Qualitative/people skills are more valued then quantitative/financial skills
Goodbye to the Kozlowski′s of the executive suite?
— The top qualities of today′s leaders in order of importance are: Integrity, listening skills, ethics, trust, and strategic vision
— 80% see business management today as being more market vs. product driven than five years ago
Where are the extra hours in their day going?
— C–level executives spend five waking hours per day on leisure activities
— One third of top executives strongly agree that they need to take vacations to "relax and recharge"
— Only 14% of top executives are getting eight or more hours of sleep a night (the mean is 6.8 hours), nearly half wake up before 6am each morning, and over half retire for the evening after 11pm
Building the knowledge base
— Three out of the top five leisure activities cited by executives revolve around increasing their knowledge base through media sources such as magazines, newspapers and the internet
