Jerry Tarde is the Chairman and Editor–In–Chief of Golf Digest and the Chairman and Editorial Director of Golf Digest Publications, which also includes Golf World and Golf Digest Index.
Mr. Tarde has been the chief editor at Golf Digest for 24 years, growing the circulation of the world’s leading golf publication to 1.65 million and expanding its international affiliates to 30 editions.
He’s attracted some of the most noted writers in journalism to the magazine as contributing editors, including Thomas L. Friedman, David Owen and John Feinstein. And he’s signed to exclusive contracts the greatest players in the history of the game––Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa.
Mr. Tarde and the team of writers he assembled have won more than 100 awards from the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA) and have earned five nominations for National Magazine Awards. Golf Digest won a Silver Gavel Award in 1989 from the American Bar Association for a series he edited about discrimination at private golf clubs. The award is given annually to media and subjects in the arts who have been exemplary in fostering the American public’s understanding of the law and legal system. The series also led Mr. Tarde to become one of the founders of the National Minority Golf Symposium.
Prior to graduation from Northwestern University’s School of Journalism in 1978, Mr. Tarde joined Golf Digest as an intern and was named Assistant Editor soon thereafter. Mr. Tarde became Associate Editor in 1979 and Senior Editor in 1982. In 1984, at age 28, Mr. Tarde was named Editor of Golf Digest.
In 1990 Mr. Tarde was named Vice President of the New York Times Magazine Group, Golf Digest’s former umbrella company, and assumed the role of Editorial Director in 1998. Advance Publications acquired the magazine group in 2001 and Mr. Tarde was named Chairman of the newly–named Golf Digest Companies.
