Inside Golf World Podcast: How We Cover The Masters

Trust us when we say we know the feeling.

A blank computer screen can be one of the scarier sights for any journalist, particularly when you're assigned the main piece at the year's biggest tournament. In this week's Inside Golf World Podcast, Golf World contributing writer Jim Moriarty discusses what went in to reporting and writing the game story from the 77th Masters, which chronicled Adam Scott's playoff victory over Angel Cabrera.

Of course, the week that was at Augusta National saw more storylines play out than simply Scott becoming the first Australian to win a green jacket.

Moriarty details how he went about keeping the various subplots (slow-play warnings, illegal ball drops, etc.) organized so that come Sunday night--and into Monday morning--he was able to craft a cogent, entertaining look at the year's first major.

Inside Golf World Podcast: Profiling the man behind Bandon Dunes, Mike Keiser

Traveling to Oregon's Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is a trip that is on nearly every golfer's bucket list.

The man behind the land is Mike Keiser, a 67-year-old businessman who made his money in greeting cards, and then rose to prominence in the golf-course-development business after unearthing 1,200 acres of scrubby land along the Pacific Coast.

For Golf World's Architecture Issue, Jeff Silverman authors a profile on Keiser in the March 18th issue of the magazine that attempts to identify what influenced his golf mind and eventually propelled him toward creating an oasis in Bandon, Ore.

Silverman is the featured guest on this week's Inside Golf World Podcast, where he shares what it was like to hang out with the approachable Bandon boss, and tries to measure the impact Keiser has had on course development in the last decade as well as for years to come.

It's rather common, explains Paul Azinger during this week's podcast, for tour pros to offer each other advice, particularly when they are as close as Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker. "It just turned out unfortunately for Stricker that Tiger ended up beating him by a couple of shots," said Azinger when discussing the putting tip that aided Woods at Trump Doral as he walked off with the WGC-Cadillac Championship title.

Azinger and Jaime Diaz discuss what went right for Tiger and how it sets him up for the Masters. Azinger also takes time to reflect on the recent passing of his father.

Inside Golf World Podcast: The Florida Swing and its proximity to home

You don't need an anthropology degree to appreciate why tour pros might be keen on living in Florida.

Nice weather, no state income tax and the overall laid-back feel make it a logical place for golfers such as Keegan Bradley (right) to call home.

In particular, the 30-mile stretch along the southeast coast in and around Jupiter, Fla., has become a magnet for players of all ages, tours and places on the World Ranking.

Golf World senior writer Tim Rosaforte is intimately familiar with the scene, having lived there since the 1980s.

"Golf's Hot Spot," our March 4 cover story, is Rosaforte's personal look at why the area has become increasingly popular among pro golfers.

In this week's Inside Golf World podcast, Rosaforte provides more details on the player migration to Jupiter and explains how clubs such as Old Palm, The Bear's Club, Medalist GC and The Dye Preserve have welcomed them with open arms.

Matt Kuchar's nice-guy persona remains even as his on-course competitiveness seemingly intensifies. His win at the WGC-Accenture Match Play, as Azinger and Jaime Diaz note in this week's Zinger's Corner, is more impressive given the swing change he made--and quickly absorbed. Ariya Jutanugarn's 72nd-hole stumble at the Honda LPGA Thailand is also discussed, as is the matter of anchoring in the wake of Tim Finchem stating the PGA Tour believes the proposed ban is a mistake. A healthy argument ensues regarding the wisdom of the tour opposing the USGA/R&A, with Paul and Jaime in opposite camps.

These are some of the many details Franz Lidz shares in his cover story about the European-Tour-pro-turned-golf-TV-celebrity appearing in the Feb. 18 issue of Golf World.

Chatting on this week's Inside Golf World Podcast, Lidz, a former senior writer at Sports Illustrated, discusses interviewing golf's favorite interviewer. Lidz contends Feherty's schtick is genuine and that he really is comfortable talking about pretty much any topic. That doesn't mean he doesn't want to have a mulligan on some of the things he says, as Lidz relates with a story about how a few pages from his reporter's notebook went missing after their interview.

During his win this weekend at Pebble Beach, Brandt Snedeker showed not just prowess on the greens but improved ball-striking skills. In this week's Zinger's Corner, Paul theorizes that Snedeker may be one of a handful of players set to dominate the PGA Tour in 2013.

"I just believe that this may be one of those years where... these guys that know how to win [will] have a stranglehold on the tour," Azinger says. "Five or 10 guys may hog all the wins." Also mentioned: Rocco Mediate's debut win on the Champions Tour and amateur Lydia Ko's youthful march to victory in another pro start.

Contrarian views are nothing new for Paul Azinger, who in this week's edition of the Zinger's Corner podcast offers counter arguments on two topics in the news: pace of play and performance enhancing drugs. In his chat with Golf World editor-in-chief Jaime Diaz, Azinger isn't sure assessing players penalty strokes for slow play will address the problem--and it actually might create other issues. Meanwhile, Azinger questions what substances on the list of PEDs that the PGA Tour prohibits are proven to lower scores on the course and whether the list needs to be better tailored for golf. "In 1993 I had cancer in my right shoulder," he said, "and I couldn't put my scorecard in my back pocket most of the year. But because of Advil, an anti-inflammatory, I was able to play every day. How is that not a performance enhancing drug? Yet it's still legal." Azinger also tips is cap to Phil Mickelson and his performance at TPC Scottsdale while applauding the Phoenix crowds for making it a tournament worth watching.
