We are at that point in the calendar when the remaining NFL teams are desperately hoping to extend their season a couple of weeks and into the Super Bowl. But that's not to say life is so bad in the off-season, especially when there is golf involved. Here we look at how some of football's best measure up when trading their cleats for soft spikes.

Mickelson makes switch to long putter official

NORTON, Mass. -- Keegan Bradley gives a lot of the credit for his PGA Championship victory to Phil Mickelson and if Lefty should one day add to his total of four majors, he may have to return the compliment to Keegan. Mickelson mentored Bradley about how to handle life on the PGA Tour and now Keegan is tutoring Phil on the art of the long putter.

Mickelson teed off in his first competitive round with the Odyssey Sabertooth 46 1/2 inch putter in his bag Friday as the Deutsche Bank Championship began at TPC Boston. And the switch had its roots in a conversation Mickelson had with Bradley, a discussion that remains ongoing.

"I played with Keegan Bradley and I asked him a bunch of questions and ended up having Odyssey make up an exact replica of the putter he has," Mickelson said. The only difference between the clubs is the insert. "I got it on Monday and I've been talking to him on the phone a little bit, little tidbits on ball position, setup and so forth."

Woods makes surprise appearance in Boston

There was a surprise guest at the Four Seasons in Boston for Wednesday
night's Deutsche Bank Championship pro-am draw party: Tiger Woods.

With the Tiger Woods Foundation being a beneficiary of the tournament, Woods
stopped by after the Notah Begay charity outing in upstate New York to say a
few words. Afterward, Woods headed to a private box at the Red Sox-Yankees
game at Fenway Park.

Woods is a personal friend of Seth Waugh, CEO of Deutsche Bank Americas and
face of the tournament. Eric Baldwin, tournament director, reached out to
the Woods camp when Tiger was officially not eligible for the FedEx Cup
playoff.

Mickelson the latest to put long putter in his bag

NORTON, Mass. -- Phil Mickelson's pro-am group in the Deutsche Bank Championship played the back nine first Thursday morning at TPC Boston. Lefty missed the tenth green short, chipped up to two feet and then said to his amateur partners, "I'm going to give you a thrill." He then reached into his bag and took out a Odyssey Sabertooth long putter.

"I thought I'd give it a try," Mickelson said. For the record, that first short putt with the long shaft found the cup, and as they walked off the green one of the amateurs could be heard saying, "I know what stock I'm going to buy," which prompted laughs all around.

Mickelson, who also had his regular putter in the bag, two-putted from 20 feet with the 461/2 inch shaft on No. 11 and seemed prepared to continue the experiment. The real interest will come Friday when play commences at the Deutsche Bank and Mickelson tees off at 12:28. What putter will he have in the bag then? He putted with both hands together, not with the split grip with the left hand anchored against the chest.

Lefty has long been considered to have one of the best short games on
tour, but he also has had a career in which he has missed more than his
share of short putts. Most recently, he fanned on a few coming down the
stretch in the British Open at Royal St. Georges when he had a chance to
win.

Keegan Bradley living out his dreams on and off the course

NORTON, Mass. -- There is that cliche about being able to take the boy out of the country but not being able to take the country out of the boy. Well, the same can be said about Keegan Bradley when it comes to New England. And it can also be said about that chip he has on his shoulder that even the Wanamaker Trophy can't knock off.

Bradley, who was born and raised in Woodstock, Vt., and played on a state championship high school team in Hopkinton, Mass., is having a homecoming of sorts this week at the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Tuesday night he threw out the first pitch at the Red Sox-Yankees game and on Wednesday he fielded questions about whether he could be the PGA Tour Player of the Year.

"That was one of my dreams," Bradley said about climbing the pitching mound at Fenway Park. "I got to realize that dream last night." Then, in talking about the reaction he got from people at the ballpark, he added: "They know I'm New England. It's fun to come back home." As for being Player of the Year: "That's every player's dream," he said.
