BBC Awards vitriol: A 'farce,' Poulter says

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is an otherwise innocuous awards show that was anything but this time around, most of the controversy created by golf.

Jockey A.P. McCoy and World Darts champion Phil Taylor finished one-two in the SPOTY, ahead of U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland and England's Lee Westwood, No. 1 in golf's World Ranking. This didn't sit well with England's Ian Poulter, who <a href="http://twitter.com/Ianjamespoulter"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">expressed his displeasure via Twitter.

"Why Poulter was Tweeting mad!" <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/article-1340300/BBC-Sports-Personality-The-worst-award-year--again.html?ito=feeds-newsxml"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">a headline in the Daily Mail said.

"IAN POULTER TEED OFF AT 'FARCE,' a headline in the Daily Star said.

Here's a Poulter sampling from Twitter:

-- "BBC Spoty farce, sorry how could @Graeme_McDowell or @WestwoodLee not win. GMac wins a major westy world no 1. That's Bollox"

-- "Darts comes second in the BBC Spoty voting get a grip. Congrats to AP. Great sportsman and a gent but wasn't my choice"

England's Oliver Wilson <a href="http://twitter.com/Oliver_Wilson"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">also weighed in via Twitter: "Just getting #spoty update, can't believe westy nor gmac won or even placed! Absolute Rubbish."

Then there was Colin Montgomerie, who received the coach of the year award for the European Ryder Cup victory.

"Colin Montgomerie coach of the year? You must be joking," <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/lawrence-donegan-golf-blog/2010/dec/20/colin-montgomerie-coach-of-year"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">said the headline on a blog post by Lawrence Donegan in the Guardian. Donegan wrote: "...if you know anything about the Ryder Cup you will know the title of 'captain' carries about as much weight as a punch in the guts from Gyles Brandreth. Bad captains win Ryder Cups, great captains lose them. It's the players, stupid."

Former British Open champion Paul Lawrie <a href="http://twitter.com/paullawrie99"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">was among those mocking this award.

"Didn't know monty was a coach? Must ask him for a lesson........," he posted on Twitter.

"What has pete cowan [sic] got to do to win coach of the year"

Pete Cowen coaches both Westwood and McDowell.

Oliver Wilson's foot fault

England's Oliver Wilson has temporarily abandoned traditional golf shoes at the Dubai World Championship, and has replaced them with Vibram Five Fingers, or, as this story calls them, "the strangest golf shoes ever seen."

"I've had them for the last three weeks after my trainer turned up wearing a pair," he told PA Sports. "I practice barefoot sometimes and swing it better, so I'd thought I'd give them a go. They look horrific and I've had lots of comments, but they're good for you and I think the positives certainly outweigh the negatives. "You walk better in them and there's less strain on the legs, but I'm not sure I'll be keeping them on."

Here's <a href="http://twitpic.com/37vx6b"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">a photo of them, from Twitpic:

Vibram Five Fingers principally were designed for running. As more is learned about benefits of running barefoot, they help replicate the experience, without actually exposing the feet.

As golf shoes, well, summon the fashion police.

It was so bad it was good

AKRON, Ohio -- Here's how England's Oliver Wilson described his play following the second round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Friday:

-- "It was horrific all day. It was probably the wildest I have ever hit it off the tee."

-- "Today it was just pathetic."

-- "I hit it all over the place...I managed to hit a few fairways and greens, but they weren't good shots. It is just abysmal. I literally had not a clue where it was going on the back nine."

-- "I came here and my body is just all over the place, my alignment, my setup. I just feel so uncomfortable. My weight is on my left side and everything is askew. At the end of the day it starts to feel a bit better and then the next day I come out and it's just as bad again. It's like banging my head against a brick wall at the moment."

Wilson, incidentally, shot his second straight one-under par 69 at the difficult Firestone Country Club. Though he may have sounded as though he's on the verge of quitting, he can't. He's in contention.
