The Grind: Jason Collins' announcement, Rory's b-day gifts & pies in the face

By Alex Myers

Welcome to another edition of The Grind, where we are really impressed by Jason Collins. It takes a lot of guts to do what he did. A finely-tuned professional athlete coming out and admitting he's a bad golfer? Well done. Ohhh, that wasn't the big announcement? He also did what?! Wow. Good for him and hopefully others will follow. And great job by him to pay tribute to a cause close to his heart by wearing the No. 98. We just hope he doesn't think that's the type of score he should settle for on the golf course. After all, the NBA's off-season coincides perfectly with the golf season in most of this country. Jason, get to work!

WE'RE BUYING

Billy Horschel. We saw this one coming when we plugged him into our lineup last week. Then again, didn't everyone? It seemed like Horschel was going to keep playing every week until he finally got his first PGA Tour win. A Sunday 64, including a dramatic 27-footer for birdie on the final hole, got it done. While the former college star probably felt this was a long time coming, he pleasantly reminded us that you don't have to take a long time to hit a shot to be a good golfer.

We'd hoot and holler like we just won a million bucks, too, if we just won a million bucks.

Tianlang Guan. For a second time this month, this 14-year-old phenom teed it up at a PGA Tour event and for a second time, he made the cut. To put this accomplishment in perspective, keep in mind Tiger Woods didn't make a PGA Tour cut until he was 19 and in his eighth try at the 1995 Masters.

Related: Golfers who play fast

Inbee Park. Or should we just start calling the No. 1 player in women's golf "Winbee"?

WE'RE SELLING

PGA Tour drug testing. Greg Norman ripped the PGA Tour's drug testing policy, pointing out that the Vijay Singh situation could just be the tip of the iceberg. While we agree the PGA Tour has been lax on this issue (there's no reason golf should lag behind other professional sports), we just wish it didn't come from Norman. Adam Scott's recent Masters win for Australia seems to have put Norman back in the spotlight -- and the Shark seems to be eating it up.

PGA Tour weather. From fog to snow, we've seen every possible type of delay in the book this year. But a lightning delay with the two contenders -- one of whom has been agonizingly close to getting his first tour win of late -- in the middle of the FINAL hole of regulation? C'mon, Mother Nature. That's just cruel.

Michael Jordan. We love MJ's passion for the game, but a wedding reception on a golf course? On a Saturday? How are the members of the Bear's Club supposed to keep their games sharp? Oh right, they all probably just played at one of their other clubs over the weekend. However, we are NOT selling Yvette Prieto, Jordan's new wife. In addition to being beautiful, she even puts up with sitting through Charlotte Bobcats games with the team owner (above).

ON TAP

Speaking of Charlotte, the PGA Tour heads there for the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. Unfortunately, a couple of the course's greens had to undergo emergency replacement recently. This means the pros might actually have to play a couple less-than-perfect greens for the first time in years. What an OUTRAGE!

Related: The top 10 players without a major

Random tournament fact: This is the only event in which Tiger Woods has missed the cut twice as a pro. In semi-related news, Tiger Woods isn't playing this week.

WEEKLY YAHOO! FANTASY LINEUP

Why were we such big fans of Horschel's win in New Orleans? A. We had him in our lineup last week; B. We pegged him as one of our Sleeper Picks heading into this season and highlighted him as the guy on the list with the most potential. Man, do we look smart now. . .

Starters -- (A-List): Bill Haas. The 2011 FedEx Cup champ played his college golf up the road at Wake Forest University and has a pair of T-4s on this course.

(B-List): Webb Simpson. Another Demon Deacon with a good track record here, Simpson lives in Charlotte. He'll get to feel what it's like to commute to work for a week and should have plenty of crowd support.

(B-List): Lucas Glover. The 54-hole leader in New Orleans is familiar with being in contention at Quail Hollow as well. He won here in 2011 and was a runner-up in 2009.

(C-List): Lee Westwood. The former World No. 1 finally got the hang of this track last year with a T-5 (68-66 over the weekend) and seems to be hitting his stride with back-to-back top 10s. We also liked his hungover report on Twitter following his 40th birthday celebration.

Bench -- Rory McIlroy (2010 champ), Zach Johnson, John Senden, Rickie Fowler (2012 champ).

VIRAL VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Geoff Shackelford's headline says it all: "Oosthuizen's 500-yard, 120-second cart path drive." As if these guys needed any help with distance.

Via Twitter: "Got these awesome early birthday presents last night from @CaroWozniacki! #lucky" Apparently, Rory loves him some Louis Vuitton.

THIS AND THAT

Two questions: Why isn't Guan playing in this and is this kid his younger brother? . . . Muirfield was lengthened for this year's Open championship. Why? Because every course HAS to be lengthened before it hosts a major again. . . . Brad Faxon gave Jeff Sluman a vicious pie in the face after the two teamed up to win last week's Legends of Golf event on the Champions Tour (Unfortunately, there's no picture. Hence, the photo of Evan Longoria giving the treatment to a Rays teammate). It's one thing for younger guys to do this, but the over-50 crowd? We're just glad no one involved was hurt. . . .

RANDOM QUESTIONS TO PONDER

When will a professional male golfer come out as gay?

Is this Dumb and Dumber sequel really going to happen?

What did Tiger get Michael and Yvette as a wedding gift?

Michael Jordan's wedding reception held on Jack Nicklaus' golf course

By Alex Myers

How much does Michael Jordan love golf? He couldn't even tear himself away from the course for his own wedding weekend.

Related: 10 Rules For Competing From Michael Jordan

Actually, with upwards of 2,000 guests, a golf course was a logical choice, especially one located in the NBA legend's backyard. On Saturday, Jordan wed longtime girlfriend Yvette Prieto and the reception was held at the Bear's Club, a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf club and community in Jupiter, Fla.

According to JeffRealty.com, Jordan's wedding tent was 40,000 square feet -- 5,000 bigger than his mansion, which looks to be located about a solid 3-wood away from where the reception was held in the picture below.

The realty company called it the "largest tent in wedding history," so you can add another line to the competitive Jordan's career accomplishments.

Reported guests included Tiger Woods, Patrick Ewing, Spike Lee and Ahmad Rashad. The music entertainment was as impressive with Usher, Robin Thicke, K'Jon, DJ MC Lyte and The Source all performing.

Related: Golf Digest goes behind-the-scenes with Jordan

Nicklaus granted Jordan permission to have the celebration on the course's driving range. We're just wondering if Jordan and Woods were able to sneak out to hit a small bucket.

A Q&A with Morning Drive host and Tiger Woods' buddy Ahmad Rashad

Ahmad Rashad is a former NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver who played a total of 10 seasons for the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills and St. Louis Cardinals. Upon retirement, Rashad began a successful career in sports broadcasting. Now, he can be seen daily on Golf Channel's morning show, Morning Drive.

Rashad has befriended some of the most famous athletes and celebrities in the world throughout his career, and regularly plays golf with two of his closest friends, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. How connected is he? We asked Rashad who he'd most like to play golf with that he hasn't already. He was stumped.

Ahmad Rashad at the 2005 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
Photo: A. Messerschmidt/Getty Images

You were once an NFL star. Then you became an NBA analyst, and now, all of a sudden, you're on Golf Channel. What has allowed you to make the transition from sport to sport so easily?

I first got into this business when I was still playing for the Vikings. I worked at a CBS affiliate and did football, baseball, girls' high school basketball -- everything. I wanted to be able to do any sport; that was always the challenge. Having been a football player, most viewers associated me with just that. It was tough to go from football to basketball, but what really helped was that my show, Inside Stuff, was personality driven. I was recognized by players and fans as someone who not only had a passion for the game, but was somewhat knowledgeable about it.

Getting into golf was another change. I readily took this challenge knowing I had to approach it the same way I did my other jobs. It's all about the personalities and the people. NBC producer Dick Ebersol always taught me that if you can show the fans what the players are like -- and get the fans interested in them -- then they're more likely to watch. I've always taken that approach.

You've been friends with Tiger Woods for a long time and have played a lot of golf with him. How did the relationship begin, and how has it evolved?

Tiger Woods has been one of my best friends for 25 years. I first met Tiger at an event I was hosting in Chicago; he was getting an award. Tiger's father Earl knew about me and introduced me to his son. We stayed in contact and eventually started spending a lot of time playing golf and talking. We both ended up living in Jupiter, Fla., and now we spend a lot of time together, playing a lot of golf. I get a lot of insight into the tour and the players through Tiger.

So what's it like down there in Jupiter? Where do you play most of your golf?

I'm a member at the Bear's Club and Old Palm. My neighbors now are Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Keegan Bradley -- these are guys I play golf with on a regular basis. I'm an OK golfer and to have a chance to play with these guys regularly is unbelievable. Rory McIlroy lives around the corner. Here I am just now entering the golf world, and one weekend I play with Tiger and Rory. I don't know how you do better homework than that.

When you play golf with Tiger and these other guys, do they give you any tips on your swing?

I only get tips if I ask. It's never a teaching lesson. But the difference with Tiger is that I practice with him. We'll spend the whole day practicing and not play a hole. But when I'm with Keegan or Luke or some of the other guys, we're just out playing. We're having a great time in each other's company. I'm telling funny stories from ages ago and they're telling me stuff about golf. They're my good friends who I enjoy spending four hours with laughing and having a great time.

Related: The NFL's Top Gridiron Golfers

Do you feel pressure when you're playing with them?

I put the pressure on them! They're the best in the world but if they give me enough strokes, they really have to play well to beat me. They never want to lose so they're not giving me putts. Keegan tells me I'm a human ATM machine. That's how serious he is about beating me. I said to him the other day, "You know, I'm the only guy you've beaten in weeks."

It's not about the money, he just loves to take my money. Same with Michael [Jordan]. These guys are really prepared to take our money. We give them a lot of heat, too. If a guy hasn't won on tour in a while, Michael will tell them, "You know, you might as well stay here and play me all week."

You say you're not that great of a golfer, but for some reason, I doubt that.

My handicap is 3. I always have to play the back tees with these guys. But here's where Tiger gets me -- rather than playing the back tees, he'll play one step off the back tee box. So if the hole is 460, we're playing it from 490. He's hitting 7 iron into the green and I'm hitting 3 wood. But when you play with great players it's on you to keep up. You can't be hacking balls in the bushes. That puts a little pressure on me. I'm a strong 3, I'm comfortable with that. I just love the game.

What else do these guys do on a regular basis to really challenge themselves?

I see Luke [Donald] in the morning hitting balls on the range, and I'll go back out at night and he's still hitting balls. I'll go play another 18 and he's still there. Same with Rory. Sun up to sun down, just bangin' balls. The next day, Luke's on the putting green for hours. People don't understand the work that goes into it. Then I think, when I was a receiver I caught millions of balls! That's the same approach Michael had to basketball: practice as hard as possible. You don't become great by thinking you're great. Working gives you all the confidence in the world.

Related: Deron Williams Interview

Let's talk about the gig on Morning Drive. It must take quite a toll on you with the hours and preparation. How are you handling that, and how do you like being a golf analyst?

Here's the thing: I'm not and will never be a golf analyst. We have guys on the show that are former pro golfers. They analyze. I try to ask the questions that the fan at home would ask. I can analyze the mental approach to the game, but I can't analyze swings or any of that. And I don't try to.

I'm just lucky to have a ringside seat to watch the best in the world. I played with Tiger and Rory last week and it didn't hit me that I was playing with the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked golfers in the world until halfway through the round. Tiger was giving me ten shots and I was just trying hard to beat him.

What is the relationship between Rory and Tiger like?

When they first met, it was one of the most beautiful things to see because of the mutual respect they have for each other's accomplishments. But they still are very competitive with each other. That's what happens in sports. When I first started playing in the NFL, I wanted to play against the best cornerbacks in the league. I really wanted the guys that were a little old. I was young and strong and respected them but wanted to compete against them. That's the way it is with Rory and Tiger. They respect each other, but they both would like to be in a situation where they're competing in a major. It wasn't a love fest, just a respectful encounter. They are wonderful friends. It really was a beautiful thing to see.

What do you make of this rivalry talk?

You can't create rivalries -- they have to develop on their own. We won't see a Tiger-Rory rivalry until it really happens. Rivalries come from one guy winning half the time and the other guy winning half the time. Rory's got a handful of wins and Tiger's got seventy-six. That's not a rivalry. But Tiger knows he needs something like that. When a young guy comes on, you want to go after him. That's the beauty of sport.

Related: 10 Great Towns For the NFL and Golf

Where do you see Tiger's career heading? Does he break Jack Nicklaus' record?

I think Tiger, for the first time in a lot of years, is healthy. He doesn't have those swing woes he was having last year. I think he's really in a great space right now. I think he wins a major this year. I think he breaks Jack's record. It's inevitable. He's played so many years with injuries and has gone through some swing changes. Those are gone now. He's the best he's been in years and he's such a positive guy. He's the closest thing to Michael -- confidence wise -- that I've met.

He puts the work in and that's where the cockiness, the positivity, come from. It's not something you just wake up and you have. It's something that you develop over years.

I've played with him so many times, but there isn't a round where he doesn't dazzle me at least seven or eight times. He'll hit shots than I never even thought about. It's unbelievable! I know how much he wants it. I covered Michael, and Tiger's the same way. Everyday they go out to prove how good they are to themselves.

I know Michael is one of the greatest trash talkers in all of sports, but besides him, who is the best on the golf course?

Tiger. Definitely. He can really needle. But he can get needled too. It takes a lot of talent to trash talk. It's funny because I played a game where all we did was trash talk. And I didn't understand it because all they were doing was waking me up. You wouldn't know it, but Keegan Bradley is a great trash talker.

Now I know I stumped you earlier, but there has to be someone that you are dying to play golf with.

You know, there is. Lee Westwood keeps challenging me. I really want a piece of him after all that talk. He just moved to the neighborhood. But he's only going to give me two shots a side. I might as well just give him the money.

I've played some golf with Michelle Wie, and she's great. I'd like to play with some of the other girls on the LPGA, especially Stacy Lewis. Man, I'm just lucky to be where I am. It's amazing the opportunities I've had, just to be around a game I'm so passionate about. I'm really lucky.

Tiger and Rory will face off this week -- in a member/guest

By Tim Rosaforte

HOBE SOUND, Fla. -- Don't worry about Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy losing their form during an "off" week. Woods, who won the WGC-Cadillac Championship, and McIlroy, who rallied with a final-round 65 to finish T-10, were on the pairing sheet posted for this week's Medalist GC Member-Guest.

Related: A look at Tiger's and Rory's careers

Woods will be playing with Ahmad Rashad against a team of McIlroy and Michael Jordan on Friday in the gross division of a Stableford competition. Woods and Jordan are the Medalist members. Jordan (and Rashad) are also members at Bears Club, where McIlroy has a locker.

Based on the level of competition in the gross division, a winner could possibly not come from the flight containing the Nos. 1 (McIlroy) and 2 (Woods) players in the world.

Rickie Fowler and business manager Sam McNaughton won last year's trophy. McNaughton, a plus-2 handicap, played college golf at Fowler's alma mater, Oklahoma State. Fowler just defended his title for the second time in the Seminole Pro-Member and has also won the Medalist Caddie Tournament.

Hank Kuehne and brother Trip are also a team. Hank won the Amateur in 1998 and Trip the 2007 Mid-Amateur.

The sleepers could be board member Bill Boockford and son Billy, who played baseball at Notre Dame and is reportedly longer than any of the tour pros in the competition.

After the Woods-Rashad, Jordan-McIlroy pairing was reported online, the club has received calls to buy tickets, entry into the member-guest and also inquiries about one-week memberships. Only members and guests on the sign-up sheets will be allowed through the gate.

By John Strege

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem and Nike Golf President Cindy Davis were the only two golf representatives on Sports Illustrated's list of the "50 Most Powerful People in Sports."

Finchem was ranked 25th and Davis 46th on a list headed, not surprisingly, by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Those on the list with peripheral ties to golf include NBC Sports Chairman Mark Lazarus (the Golf Channel is part of the NBC Sports Group), CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus and IMG Worldwide CEO Michael Dolan. Lazarus is ranked seventh, McManus 13th and Dolan 14th.

Given golf's niche status in the world of sports, it perhaps is not surprising the list included only two from golf. BusinessWeek once had Tiger Woods listed No. 1, ahead of Goodell and NBA Commissioner David Stern, in its list of the "100 Most Powerful People in Sports."

There were no active athletes on Sports Illustrated's list (Michael Jordan, now the owner of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, came in 50th).

Whatever the size putter, Els still showing plenty of fire

By Dave Shedloski

MIAMI -- He'd faced longer putts with more on the line, that were more consequential and lucrative, but he desperately wanted to make this 10-footer, even though it wasn't in a tournament. Heck, he wasn't even on the golf course.

He was on the practice green Monday afternoon at Seminole GC, in the midst of completing his standard putting drill, with five 10-footers encircling the cup.

But he'd been challenged, and he still loves a challenge. He'd made the first four and was about to pull the trigger on the fifth when a familiar voice got in his ear.

"I've got $100 you don't make it," Michael Jordan said to him from behind as he stood over the ball.

"Make it $150," Ernie Els said.

He buried the putt.

It makes sense that Els would express his opposition to the recent rule change that would prohibit a player from anchoring a club to his body during a stroke. Except Els wasn't using the belly putter with which he won the Open Championship last year. He was wielding a conventional putter, an Odyssey Black #1, that he's been giving a workout the last few weeks, though he has yet to insert it into the lineup for a tournament round.

Related: The players most affected by the potential anchor ban

That could change this week at Trump Doral when the WGC-Cadillac Championship begins Thursday on the Blue Course where 65 of the top players in the world have gathered for the year's second World Golf Championship event.

"Yeah, you just might see it soon," Els said Tuesday at Doral, where he has won twice.

"I think he putts better with the short putter," said Els' caddie, Ricci Roberts. "He's got a beautiful stroke, much better than with the long putter, much more natural. I think he thinks so, too."

Still, Els has been sticking with the longer putter, and in his press conference he offered a salient observation against the ban the USGA and R&A proposed in November.

"Obviously winning a major with a belly putter, you're going to have to support that cause," the Big Easy said. "When it's been allowed for such a long time, I just feel, why ban it? You had the chance to do that . . . They allow certain things, and then they want to pull back on it. There was a square groove rule, the golf ball, the big and the small golf ball, there's the driver and the sand iron from a 56 to a 60, and we can talk about hybrid clubs. All these changes have come through in the game

"If a guy can't drive the ball really well, there's a driver that he can get made. If you can't hit an iron up in the air, you're going to get a hybrid made up for you. That's legal. If you're not a good chipper, you can go to 64, 62, 60, whatever degree. There used to be a rule where 56 degrees was the limit, so they changed that. The game's evolved that way."

Els, 43, is still evolving, too. The four-time major champion from South Africa has added to his stable of advisers. That would be Jordan, the NBA great with whom he has become friends.

"I've been picking his brain a little bit," Els said. "You talk about someone who understands competition, he's about the best you can talk to. What a competitor."

And he pays up, too. Els got the cash right there. "That wasn't the thing. Just making the putt with him standing there over me was good. I enjoyed that a lot," he said.

Love tabs Michael Jordan as adviser to U.S. Ryder Cup Team

By Derek Evers

Michael Jordan watches from the gallery during the 2010 Ryder Cup. Photo: Timothy A. Clary/Getty Images

Move over Matt Foley, there's a new motivational speaker in town. Michael Jordan will once again be riding along with the U.S., this time at the Ryder Cup, as the American team attempts to win back the Cup in his hometown of Chicago. The 49-year-old, six-time NBA champ served in a similar capacity in 2009 as an assistant captain for Fred Couples at the Presidents Cup, which influenced Love's decision.

"I told Michael this a couple weeks ago. One of the neatest things I ever saw in the Ryder Cup was Michael riding in the golf cart with Tom Kite." Love told reporters on Tuesday after announcing his final selections for the 2012 Team. "He came out to watch Freddie and I play and I thought that was one of the coolest things."

Related: Michael Jordan's swing sequence

"So I want my team, like Fred and I did, to get to see Michael. Rather than him sneaking around in the gallery, I want him to be seen and I want him to be in our team room, be hanging around and be a great influence."

While his presence might not have a big impact on their performances, having an athlete of Jordan's caliber in their corner should provide some instant motivation. After all, he can still dunk, and even had an outside chance to actually play on this year's Ryder Team.

Trending: Rhein Gibson's 55, and nine other 'unbeatable' sports records

(Rhein Gibson center, flanked by his playing partners Eric Fox, left, and Ryan Munson, right. Photo via GolfOklahoma.org)

Let us all take a moment to congratulate Rhein Gibson for the remarkable 16-under 55 he shot over the weekend at River Oaks GC in Edmond, Oklah. As amazing as it was, it's still only tied for the lowest round of golf ever recorded -- Homero Blancas fired a 55 at the 1962 Premier Invitational, in Longview, Tex. While both rounds are equally remarkable, the Guinness Book of World Records does not recognize Blancas' round because it was shot on a course deemed "too short" (the course, which actually no longer exists, was a 9-hole layout with two different tee boxes on each hole to create the full 18 and was only slightly longer than 5,000 yards). So Gibson's 55 stands alone as the pinnacle of golf records; one that I am going to go on record as saying is unbeatable.

Unbeatable the way Joe Dimaggio's 56-game hitting streak is unbeatable; or Wilt's 100 point game (or his 55 rebound game); or Byron Nelson's 11-straight consecutive tour wins. But these records are all of the sports-bar trivia variety, the kind that even the most novice of fan would be able to answer. Luckily, sports is filled with enough bizarre facts to keep the Elias Sports Bureau in business, so I've collected nine more of the most random unbeatable records to never grace the pages of Guinness. With Gibson's 55, this is a top 10 list for you to throw around the water cooler.
