Trending: Bubba and Bam hit the links

By Derek Evers

President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton spent an unseasonably warm December afternoon the way many of us would like to -- on the golf course.

According to the Associated Press, President Obama and Mr. Clinton played with U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Virginia gubernatorial candidate -- and longtime Clinton backer -- Terry McAuliffe at the Joint Air Base in Maryland. It was likely Bam was using this as an opportunity to thank the 42nd President for his campaign help, though with a fiscal cliff looming, the president might have been seeking advice from the
last man to oversee a balanced budget while in office.

For those keeping count, this is the third time Obama has played golf since defeating Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in November. Although it should be noted President Obama has regularly used the golf course for high-profile meetings, most notably last June when he teed it up with Speaker of the House John Boehner during the debt ceiling crisis.

So if there's a lesson to be learned here, it's that golf might just be the solution to all of our fiscal issues.

Boehner, Biden talk golf before Obama speech

It apparently is never a bad time for hard-core golfers to share their experiences, as Speaker of the House John Boehner demonstrated in this conversation with Vice President Joe Biden that was overheard in the moments preceding President Obama's speech to Congress on Thursday evening:

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

Here is the transcript:

Boehner: "I played a little golf in August, and I was at Dismal River Golf Club out in Sand Hills, Neb. It's in the middle of nowhere. One of the hardest golf courses you'll ever want to see. Sand Hills and Dismal. Seven birdies, five bogeys, I shoot two under."

Biden: "You're kidding me."

Chi Chi Rodriguez was honored by the House of Representatives this week, with House Resolution 1430, that said: "Honoring and saluting golf legend Juan Antonio 'Chi Chi' Rodriguez for his commitment to Latino youth programs of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute."

It wasn't a universally popular commemorative resolution, no offense to Rodriguez... apparently. Congressman Greg Walden (R-Oregon) wants to reduce the number of such resolutions, citing the one given to Rodriguez as an example.

"If Americans knew we spent this week honoring and saluting golf legend Chi Chi Rodriguez . . . while their taxes are about to go up and our national debt is exploding, they'd send us all packing," <a href="http://http://www.kgw.com/sports/Boehner-to-Walden---No-smack-talk-about-Chi-Chi-Rodriguez-111229249.html"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Walden said at a news conference which the next House Speaker, John Boehner, an avid golfer, also attended. Noting Boehner's frown, Walden quickly added, "Now, there's nothing wrong with Chi Chi."

Boehner then stepped to the microphone and said this: "Let me...express my apologies to my friend Chi Chi Rodriguez."

Boehner and Obama have golf in common

With the Republicans taking control of the House of Representatives in January as a result of Tuesday's election, President Obama is going to have to find common ground with the opposition to get anything accomplished in the next two years of his administration. It could very well be that common ground will be a golf course. The President is well known for teeing it up when he has some free time, as is the man expected to be the next Speaker of the House -- Rep. John Boehner, a Republican from Ohio.

In the Golf Digest ranking of Washington's Top 200 golfers, published in 2008, Boehner was ranked No. 36 with a 6.3 handicap (up from a 4.8 in 2005). According to GHIN, Boehner's index was 8.1 as of Nov. 1, the day before the election. The GHIN records show 14 posted rounds for Boehner in 2010 -- all at his home club Wetherington G&CC in Cincinnati -- although all indications are that he plays much more than that, with some of his political opponents placing the number at more than 100 rounds a year.

Boehner is well known for using the golf course to conduct business. Federal Election Commission filings obtained by the Reuters news agency showed that Boehner's political action committee spent $82,998 on golf outings in 2009, including events at Robert Trent Jones GC in Virginia, Muirfield Village near Columbus, Ohio and the Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Fla. "If you're going to ask people to give you money, why not let them enjoy themselves," Boehner told Golf Digest in 2005. Boehner said he doesn't discriminate against lobbyists who don't play golf, but added, "If someone I've gotten to know on the golf course comes into my office with a good argument, I tend to want to listen."
