Podcast: Nova Scotia's Cabot Links--a remote destination worth the trip

There are worse places to find yourself getting lost than Nova Scotia, the beauty of the land in eastern Canada an understandable reason to stop paying attention to your car's GPS.

In our May 20th issue, Golf World Contributing Editor Roland Merullo's travel feature on Cabot Links, the highly acclaimed course on Cape Breton developed by Ben Cowan-Dewar and Mike Keiser, explains how a few detours and the search for an open gas station hardly ruined the experience when making the trip after the course opened last summer.

Merullo is the guest on this week's Inside Golf World Podcast and takes us through his travelogue, which included a stop at Highland Links. Along the way he gives some history of how Cabot Links came to be, talks about what's in store when sister course Cabot Cliffs opens in 2015, and explains why a visit to the remote destination is worth the time and effort.

Inside Golf World Podcast: Our "Words from the Wise" package

With age comes wisdom--or at least an appreciation that maybe we actually didn't know everything when we were in our 20s.

The perspective that golf's elder statesmen (and women) provide is what has made our "Words from the Wise" package a popular one among readers since we first ran it in 2011.

Our April 1 issue offers the thoughts of eight golf sages--Jack Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Marilynn Smith, Frank Hannigan, Frank Beard, Charlie Owens, Kel Nagle and Raymond Floyd.

In this week's Inside Golf World Podcast contributing writer John Strege, who spoke with Casper and Beard, discusses how he got his interview subjects to let it fly and speak to their hearts' content.

Inside Golf World Podcast: Following the equipment vans on the PGA Tour

They spend upwards of 40 weeks out of the year on the road, logging as many as 35,000 miles traveling from one PGA Tour stop to the next.

Life as a tech, or one of the drivers, for one of the 10 or so equipment vans on the PGA Tour isn't easy. But those couple dozen folks who hold these jobs genuinely enjoy the lifestyle.

Golf World equipment editor E. Michael Johnson wrote about these modern-day gypsies in the March 11 issue of Golf World, our annual equipment issue, and offered more insight into their lives during this week's Inside Golf World Podcast.

Unknown and unheralded to most golf fans, the techs play a critical role in helping tour pros feel comfortable with what's in their bags, letting them to, hopefully, rise up the leader board.

Says Johnson: "These guys may be the most important conduit out there for the player to their success along with say their caddie, and when it leads to success they take pride in that."

Inside Golf World Podcast: Lessons Learned As The Masters Looms

As the PGA Tour closes out the West Coast portion of its season at Dove Mountain outside Tucson with the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, it gives us at Golf World a natural chance to break down what's happened thus far in 2013. In this week's edition of the Inside Golf World podcast, senior writer Tim Rosaforte and executive editor Ron Sirak debate the various storylines that have stood out to date--most notably victories by top talents Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and the continued emergence of Brandt Snedeker after claiming last year's FedEx Cup title--and discuss what they potentially mean as the tour heads east with four stops in Florida during the next month. As the run-up to the Masters begins in earnest, Rosaforte and Sirak also offer their early faves to succeed at Augusta.

Inside Golf World Podcast: "The 18 Most Important Moments in Golf"

With this year marking the centennial of Francis Ouimet's monumental victory at the 1913 U.S. Open, it was natural for us to want to remember the tournament and its lasting impact.

Easily it's one of golf's most historic events, with many believing it's the seminal moment in golf given the interest it engendered for what was then still a nascent sport in the United States.

That got us talking about what the other standout events in the last 100 years are among the most important in golf?

In Golf World's Feb. 4 magazine, we offer our thoughts with a cover story package titled "The 18 Most Important Moments in Golf."

Senior editor Bill Fields spearheaded the project, authoring the lead piece on Ouimet's brilliance at Brookline as well as overseeing the entire package.

In our Inside Golf World Podcast, Fields shares some of the research that went into his story, how the other moments were chosen, and what other moments in history just missed being included (hint: April 1986).
