Trending: Celebrating National Golf Day

Today is National Golf Day.

Actually, it's the fifth annual National Golf Day.

Take that in for a moment.

I'm not a mind reader, but I can guarantee you're thinking one of two things: 'Why am I at work and not playing golf?' or 'Why the hell does golf deserve a day?' Now, I realize we failed at making Opening Day a national holiday and I'm currently at work writing this, so you have my sympathy, but before you go scoffing at the credibility of golf's importance to this country -- and around the world -- please give me a few moments to enlighten you on why this day does in fact matter.

Trending: The best golf movies

As the Oscar's approach this evening, it's hard not to think of our favorite golf movies throughout the years. Unfortunately, none of them has ever won an Oscar, but that's not a golf-related issue; only three sports movies have ever won the Academy Award for Best Picture--Rocky (1976), Chariots of Fire (1981), and Million Dollar Baby (2004). And when you consider classics like Raging Bull, Field of Dreams, The Natural and Hoosiers came up empty, how do we expect such cinematic gold as Seven Days in Utopia to fare much better?

Related: Our favorite golf movie scenes

But that doesn't stop the golf enthusiast in all of us from discussing our favorite golf movies. 99.9% of all lists I've uncovered name Caddyshack as their top golf-related film of all time (apparently Bleacher Report felt the need to be different and ranked it as number three). Believe it or not, Sports In Movies, using an algorithm of user reviews and media sources, has Seven Days in third ahead of both Tin Cup and Happy Gilmore--both regular top-five's for most. An often overlooked classic regularly mentioned is the 1952 comedy Pat and Mike, which was filmed at the Riviera Country Club and featured Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy along with a host of professional female golfers, including Babe Zaharias. I Guess the most reliable source would be Amazon, which uses both user rankings and purchase numbers to determine it's list.

But no matter which way you cut it, Caddyshack is far and away the best golf movie of all time, at least in the eyes of nearly all of humanity (sorry Bleacher Report). How this did not receive an Oscar is beyond us.

-- Derek Evers
In honor of July 4th, an ode to the hot dog

You've heard the Golf Digest nutritional spiel for years regarding those lethal, nitrate-loaded, cholesterol-building hot dogs that you love. Here is a quick review for those who have forgotten: a dog does have protein, iron, potassium and Vitamin-C benefits, but the sodium, fat and cholesterol content are off the charts. Get one with cheese sauce, and you're looking at 545 calories. All of which is why we've always suggested a nutrition bar for a back-nine energy boost.

But this time around, you're getting a reprieve from the message: We're with you, and that's the last of the bad hot-dog news.

Why the change of heart? It's Fourth of July time for starters, and franks and the Fourth go together quite well. But, in general, a hot dog is quick and cheap, and when we're hungry, the salt and fat in a dog taste mighty fine. Seven billion hot dogs are sold between Memorial Day and Labor Day -- undoubtedly a huge chunk at the golf course -- but they are lovable and edible year-round. Here's our ode to the dog:
