The Grind: Broken windshields, too much Guan and a historic streak on the line

By Alex Myers

Welcome to another edition of The Grind, where we've had this week circled on our calendars all year. No, it's not the U.S. Open, but it is Crowne Plaza Invitational week, and that means we'll be trying to extend our improbable streak of predicting the past two winners at Colonial.

In other words, we're going for the "Grind Slam" (Copyright pending). And while a fantasy golf achievement may not garner the notoriety of the Grand Slam or the Tiger Slam or Byron Nelson's 11-tournament winning streak, it should because prognosticating the sport is only getting more difficult. Have you watched a non-Tiger PGA Tour event lately?

"Guys, this isn't even close to my ugliest jacket."

WE'RE BUYING

Sang-Moon Bae. We're especially happy for the latest surprise winner on the PGA Tour. Why? Because no one has ever been a victim of more bad geography jokes in history.

Related: The greatest streaks in golf history

Oklahoma State golfers. First, Peter Uihlein picks up his first professional win at the Madeira Islands Open. Then another former Cowboy, Morgan Hoffmann earns his best PGA Tour finish with a T-5 at the Byron Nelson. Rickie Fowler better watch out or he might not be the most famous orange-wearing tour pro soon.

American women golfers. Stacy Lewis became the first U.S. woman golfer to win the LPGA's Player of the Year in 18 years last season, but she has company. Cristie Kerr won earlier this season and last week Jennifer Johnson picked up her first LPGA win in Alabama. Add in popular and talented players like Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis, Michelle Wie and Lexi Thompson and there's no excuse for U.S.-centric fans not to watch the LPGA anymore.

Martin Kaymer. Remember this guy? He's German? He won the 2010 PGA Championship? He was ranked No. 1 in the world? He sunk the winning putt at last year's Ryder Cup? Well, the 28-year-old finished T-5 in Dallas, perhaps indicating a return to the glory days way back when he was 26-27.

WE'RE SELLING

Anchored putting. USGA President Glen Nager couldn't have said it any better when he stated "It can never be too late to do the right thing." Golf's founders may not have had the foresight to see this becoming an issue, but we're pretty sure they never envisioned guys putting with broomsticks tucked into their chests, either.

Related: The most notable rule changes in golf history

Cruel timing. We're happy 14-time winner and longtime golf announcer Ken Venturi was elected to the Hall of Fame before he passed away, but we're sad he was passed over long enough to the point he was unable to attend his own induction ceremony. If golf can elect players who are still in their prime, why does it wait so long to give others their proper due?

Guan's latest sponsor's exemption. It was fun while it lasted. Tianlang Guan dazzled us all by making the cut at the Masters and the Zurich Classic before finally coming up short at the Byron Nelson. But now he's getting an invite to the Memorial, a limited-field event, as well? We're sorry, but enough is enough, especially when he's taking away precious spots from tour pros. Not to mention, Jason Dufner has probably seen the inside of a classroom more than this 14-year-old over the past couple months.

ON TAP

As mentioned, the PGA Tour stays in Texas for the Crown Plaza Invitational. Last year, Zach Johnson overcame a red-hot Jason Dufner (Dufsanity!) and a brain cramp on the final hole to win. ZJ received a two-shot penalty when he didn't move his mark back to its original spot before holing his final putt. Good thing he did or we would have had #Markgate on our hands!

Random tournament fact: Like the RBC Heritage, the winner at the Crowne Plaza Invitational dons a plaid jacket. Unlike the Heritage, this event can claim that Ben Hogan wore its ceremonial piece of clothing five times. Advantage: Crown Plaza Invitational.

WEEKLY YAHOO! FANTASY LINEUP

While we have an incredible two consecutive correct predictions here, we also have a heartbreaking streak of two straight weeks our pick has shared the lead late on Sunday before coming up short. Hopefully, Mr. Hogan's spirit will put us over the top. Again.

Starters -- (A-List): Tim Clark. A former runner-up here is our pick as we look for the unimaginable trifecta. He also happens to be one of the most vocal supporters of anchored putting. Fight for what you believe in, Tim!

(B-List): Zach Johnson. Coming off a disappointing week, it'll be nice for him to return to the site of his first PGA Tour title.

(B-List): Matt Kuchar. The "Matt Kuchar Rule" states this guy can't have two bad performances in a row. Maybe we need to change that to he can't have four mediocre performances in a row. . .

Related: The 10 best players without a major

(C-List): Kevin Streelman. A winner in Tampa, he is quietly the hottest player on the PGA Tour not named Tiger Woods with three straight top-six finishes.

Bench -- Jason Dufner, Fredrik Jacobson, Bo Van Pelt and Rickie Fowler.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Mike Miller, an up-and-coming amateur who I had the pleasure of covering when he was in high school, had quite a day last week. Playing in a pro-am, he made two eagles and a hole-in-one that won him a two-year lease on a Lincoln. But then this happened when he tried to imitate Rich Beem's celebration for winning a car with an ace in 2007:

In the words of Ron Burgundy after jumping into the bear pit at the end of Anchorman: "I immediately regret this decision."

VIRAL VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Nicolas Colsaerts had to take relief from a toilet during the Volvo World Match Play. No, seriously. And yes, this will probably be the easiest video to choose for this spot all year.

RANDOM PROP BETS OF THE WEEK

-- Zach Johnson will get penalized again for putting from the wrong spot: Million-to-1 odds

-- Tim Clark will win now that we've boasted about our streak: TEN Million-to-1 odds

THIS WEEK IN DUSTIN JOHNSON-PAULINA GRETZKY DISPLAYS OF PUBLIC AFFECTION

Two observations: 1. I think I have that shirt. 2. Is that a bracelet around her arm?

THIS WEEK IN TIGER WOODS-LINDSEY VONN DISPLAYS OF PUBLIC AFFECTION

Lindsey watches Tiger play poker during his Tiger Jam charity event in Las Vegas. Hey, it's not much, but perhaps when it comes to Tiger, Vegas and girls, the less we see and hear, the better.

THIS AND THAT

Tiger Woods doesn't plan on making nice with Sergio Garcia. Good, it gives us more to talk about. Now if only the USGA would pair them together next month at Merion. . . . This week marks the 10-year anniversary of Annika Sorenstam's historic round(s) at Colonial. Something tells me Vijay Singh isn't throwing a party at his house for people to come and watch the new Golf Channel documentary. . . . These chocolate chip/chunk cookies from Costco are the best chocolate chip cookies EVER. Um, make that second best. Sorry, mom!

RANDOM QUESTIONS TO PONDER

Would Ben Hogan have liked Twitter or fantasy golf? (Nope)

Does Vijay Singh have any regrets? (We hope)

Will Tim Clark make the "Grind Slam" a reality? (Not a chance)

It's a 'major' day at Seminole GC

By Tim Rosaforte

Rickie Fowler warmed up for his title defense of one of club golf's major championships by finishing T-13 in the Honda Classic yesterday. Today he will be at the Seminole GC pro-member with partner Buddy Marucci in hopes of getting his name on the locker room wall a third consecutive time.

"It's the first major of the year, so I'm playing to win," Fowler said half-kidding at PGA National. "It's cool to walk in there and have your name permanently on the board."

In the northeast corner of the Seminole locker room is a piece of mahogany with names that date to 1937. Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Jimmy Demaret and Arnold Palmer won this event, as did Bing Crosby, with Gardner Dickinson as his partner. As Lee Westwood said hitting putts before the third round of the Honda, "Everybody wants their name on the board for the Seminole Pro-Member. It's a Who's Who."

Related: See what's in Rickie Fowler's bag

The name on the wall is just part of what this is all about. "The tradition, the history, the people there -- it's such a good vibe," said Graeme McDowell. "The first year I played there, I don't think could conceive the magnitude of it, when you see Nicklaus, and Palmer and all these legends of the game, plus having the mystique of Hogan kind of just there. There are just so many good people, obviously powerful people, but that's [secondary]. It's just such a phenomenal golf course."

First off in the cold at 7:30 a.m. are the South African major championship winners (and Palm Beach Gardens residents) Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel. Ray Floyd, the club's only touring pro member, has an afternoon time with Alfy Fanjul, the sugar magnate. Palmer is on the tee at 9:30 with outgoing club president Tim Neher, who reinvented this event in 2004 (reviving the Seminole Amateur-Professional that attracted tour players from 1937 to 1961).

Paired with Fowler and Marucci are four-time club champion Kelly Miller and Sony Open winner Russell Henley. Jay Haas is playing in the same pairing as his son, Bill Haas. Adam Scott is with his mentor, Greg Norman. There are two Harmons in the field, Butch and Craig; their father Claude was the club's pro from 1945-1957, and holder of the course record (60).

There are some players -- like Haas, Scott, Zach Johnson, Bo Van Pelt, Nick Watney and Matt Kuchar -- who didn't play the Honda but are playing the Pro-Member on their way to Doral for the WGC-Cadillac Invitational. On that list is Luke Donald, who lives at The Bear's Club in Jupiter and plays the Pro-Member with fellow Northwestern alum Eric Gleacher.

This is not for charity or a corporate sponsor. This is about playing a Donald Ross masterpiece along the Atlantic, and as McDowell alluded, having the Seminole experience. Ernie Els, who plays with Johann Rupert, once traveled overnight in 2005 after a victory in Dubai and walked through the locker room doors at The 'Nole in time for his afternoon tee time. Els and Rupert won low net in '04.

Riviera's long history of celebrity sightings

By Brendan Mohler

Located only a few miles from Beverly Hills, Riviera Country Club has always been a popular hangout for Hollywood A-listers. Among those who have held memberships at the host of this week's Northern Trust Open are Walt Disney, Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck and more recently, Adam Sandler and Larry David. With names like that patrolling the grounds, you can expect the presence of many distinguished (and not always well-behaved) celebrity guests.

Around the time Riviera became known as "Hogan's Alley" (Ben Hogan won the LA Open in 1947, '48 and '50 and the U.S. Open at Riviera in '48), Humphrey Bogart spent so much time watching golf from underneath a sycamore tree on the 12th hole that the club eventually named the tree after him. "Bogey's Tree" sits left of the green and provided a comfortable spot for Bogart to relax with a thermos of Jim Beam and watch the pros play through. This is not surprising considering Bogart once said, "The problem with the world is that everyone is a few drinks behind."

Related: A look back at Hogan's history at Riviera

Bogart is only one of many famous entertainers of his day who frequented Riviera, joining the likes of Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, even Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, who shot the 1953 film The Caddy on the club's grounds that included a cameo appearance by Ben Hogan himself.

In the Los Angeles area, Hollywood shenanigans at country clubs have been curbed in recent years according to David D. Pavoni, co-author of Golf In Hollywood, because of "the era of political correctness." However, that hasn't stopped the antics of Jack Nicholson, who once took a 2-iron to the windshield of a car that had cut him off in traffic. Kevin Cook, a Golf Digest contributing writer, called it, "the most famous instance of road rage meeting golf tantrum."

Related: Golf Digest's interview with Jack Nicklaus

In another instance of golf tantrum, Nicholson hooked his tee shot on the 12th hole at Riviera and was unable to advance the ball successfully with a 5 iron on his second shot, prompting him to grab a bunch of vines in anger hanging from a nearby tree.

"They pulled back! Lifted me straight up in the air so I was flying around for a few seconds before I came down," said Nicholson in a 2007 interview with Golf Digest. "Now I can't play that 12th at Riviera without somebody saying, 'The Tarzan Hole!'"

Larry David, creator of Seinfeld and the star of the HBO show Curb Your Enthusiasm, has had his moments at Riviera as well. David is a member there and has filmed several Curb scenes at the club, although not this memorable one:

Related: Our Northern Trust Open predictions

I'd expect David and Nicholson to steer clear of Riviera this week, as most members (especially high-profile ones) tend to do when the PGA Tour invades their course. There should still be plenty of star power, though, with the Northern Trust Open featuring perhaps the year's strongest field to date.

Boo! Weekley's putting is downright scary

By Alex Myers

Boo Weekley is probably best known for wearing camouflage on the course and doing the "Bull Dance" from the movie "Happy Gilmore" during the U.S.'s upset win at the 2008 Ryder Cup. But unfortunately for the colorful golfer, his claim to fame this season isn't anything to smile about.

Related: Golf's answer to "Dancing With The Stars"

It only seems fitting to mention Boo on Halloween and even more appropriate to point out his frighteningly-bad putting stats. With one fall series event left on the PGA Tour schedule -- the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic Nov. 8-11 -- Weekley checks in at 189 out of 190 in the tour's most comprehensive putting metric: strokes gained-putting.

Of the players ranked, only Kyle Thompson is worse and his 36 measured rounds (to Weekley's 55) isn't really a fair sample size to compare. Of anyone playing as many rounds as Weekley on tour this year in which this stat was documented, Kyle Stanley is the closest when it comes to putting futility, and even he has an average that's nearly half a shot better per round.

So how has Weekley managed to earn $683,259 -- a figure that places him just inside the all-important top 125 on the money list -- thus far in 2012? Attribute it to a season of Ben Hogan-like ball-striking for the 39-year-old. Weekley ranks first on tour in total driving, T-4 in greens in regulation and first in overall ball-striking. Who are Nos. 2-5 you might ask? Just a few guys named Jason Dufner, Lee Westwood, Hunter Mahan and Justin Rose.

Related: Golf-themed Halloween costume ideas

Amazingly, Weekley ranked first in ball-striking last year as well to go along with 186th in strokes gained-putting. Without top 10s at the Puerto Rico Open and RBC Heritage (the site of his two career PGA Tour wins) to buoy him, though, Weekley made less than $300,000 in 23 events.

The stats reveal that this isn't a new trend, however. Since the tour started keeping track of strokes gained-putting in 2007, Weekley has never finished better than 161st. Weekley probably isn't a big fan of that stat, but if you also have your doubts, just know that his best "traditional" putting stat this year is putting from 20-25' -- where he ranks 134th. Come to think of it, Happy Gilmore (Think: "Just taaaap it in") wasn't known for his touch on the greens, either. . .
