Video: Ex-ballplayer gives golf lesson during TV segment

By Brendan Mohler

The fact that professional baseball players enjoy playing golf certainly isn't breaking news. But when MLB Network analysts take the time during a taping of a show to display their affection for golf, we love it!

Related: Some of baseball's biggest names play golf

Kevin Millar, former big leaguer and current co-host alongside Chris Rose of the MLB Network show "Intentional Talk", recently took a brief lesson with Golf Channel's Michael Breed at Manhattan Woods Golf Club in Nyack, NY, and was eager to show off what he learned. (Of less importance is the sound Millar's shoulder makes when he takes the club back at 0:24. Ouch.)

Based on Millar's demonstration, he seems to have a pretty good understanding of the swing. He also must be a serious golfer to have "hit balls for two hours in 38 degree misting rain."

Making sure your hips beat your shoulders to the ball is a great tip for golfers of any skill level. Proper hip movement prevents a lot of swing problems and is the foundation of a good, repeatable swing. Thanks for the free lesson, Kevin. Cowboy Up!

Golf World Monday: What golf can learn from baseball's Hall of Fame

From the Jan. 14 issue of Golf World Monday:

By E. Michael Johnson

Golf needs to take a lesson from Major League Baseball. Last week its Hall of Fame chose to take a pass, failing to elect a single new member as no player was named on the 75 percent of ballots needed for induction.

Related: Is Colin Montgomerie a Hall of Famer?

Yet in 2004 the World Golf Hall of Fame added the proviso that -- after already dropping its hall standards from 70 percent to 65 percent in 2000 -- "in the event that no candidate receives 65 percent, the nominee receiving the most votes with at least 50 percent is elected." That amendment will let Fred Couples and Colin Montgomerie, both named on 51 percent of their respective ballots, into the hall this May.

Although it is easy to understand the desire for star power to attract fans and media to the ceremony, doing so by inducting players on what is essentially a technicality is unfair to the hall, the fans and, to some extent, the player.

Take Vijay Singh, who got in with 56 percent in 2005. Singh is a sure-fire, deserving Hall of Famer with 34 PGA Tour victories and three majors. Would it have been so awful to wait until he got the required number of votes?

Golf's hall should practice what so many instructors of the game preach: patience.

Trending: Josh Beckett will spend his 18 off days on the golf course if he wants to

(Josh Beckett being pulled by manager Bobby Valentine. Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images Sport.)

When the ESPN headline about your most recent performance reads 'Indians pound embattled Red Sox starter Josh Beckett', you know you're in for some scrutiny. The fact Beckett plays in Boston with a guaranteed contract will only draw more ire from the Fenway faithful.

The reason for his embattlement? Golf.

Beckett's commitment to the Red Sox organization was brought into question after he spent his off-day on the golf course. This is a very normal occurrence for baseball players during the course of their rigorous summer schedule, but frustration started seeping in when it was revealed Beckett played golf the day after skipping a scheduled start due to a sore lat muscle in his back. Tensions boiled over when he returned to the mound and proceeded to give up seven runs in 2 1/3 innings. When pulled by manager Bobby Valentine, a chorus of boos descended down upon the pitcher as he exited.

Beckett's reaction?

"We get 18 off days a year. I think we deserve a little bit of time to ourselves."
