Overheard in the gallery at Merion

ARDMORE, Pa. -- Welcome to Merion Golf Club, where Justin Rose survived a tough test to become the champion of the 113th U.S. Open. A complete Open experience involves eavesdropping on spectator chatter. Below, some of the odd exchanges we overheard in the gallery over the weekend.

Man, on Saturday: "Next group: Tiger, Rory and somebody else." Woman standing next to him: "It's some Spanish guy."

Spectator: "Who IS that?" Friend: "Jerry Kelly." Spectator: "He's still on tour?"

About Tiger's Saturday shirt: "It looks like someone spilled hot sauce down his back."

Hard-of-seeing spectator, after Rory's approach on 15: "That's fat, that's fat. Right?" Man next to him: "No, left." Slightly-blind spectator: "Fringe? Apron? Bunker? Out of bounds?" Man next to him: "Somebody, please get this man some glasses."

Man, to woman: "Let's not go crazy now, we need to save our energy for later." Woman: "But I thought you said we'd leave after a few hours." Man: "I lied."

Near the 14th green, as crowds gradually (then exponentially) thicken: "Ugh, Tiger's coming up. He's cramping my style."

Fan, watching Billy Horschel (who's shown, left): "If I wore those Octopus pants, my ass would look like the Merion Aquarium."

Man, while walking across the fairway on the 16th hole: "What. A. Hole. I never want to play it, but what. A. Hole."

As Tiger walks up to the first tee on Sunday, woman turns to man and says, "His waist. I'm having a hard time finding it."

After a spectator thinks Martin Laird makes birdie on the 14th, "YEAAAA! Biiirrrdddd-VILLE. Birdie." (Laird actually parred the hole.)

Drunk spectator, waiting for Phil Mickelson to hit his first tee shot on Sunday: "Big head of hair, Phil. Big head of hair!" Phil smiled.

When Sergio pushes his approach on the par-4 15th, spectator yells, "It's Tiger's fault!"

Two golf carts get grounded in the mud by the ninth tee. When the drivers step on the gas pedal, mud splatters up and covers nearby spectators. Woman: "So. Gross."

As Thongchai Jaidee ungracefully steps over muddy crosswalk, spectator says, "He looks like a really bad ballerina."

As a guy runs through mud to watch Tiger, he slips and falls. When he gets up, he says, "Ugh, Tiger won't ever know my sacrifice."

After Tiger hits his approach close on the par-4 16th (first round), guy says, "That looks kinda like my shot." Friend replies, "I think he's been watching your golf."

As spectators get antsy to walk across the 16th fairway, one guy yells, "Who CARES about Thorbjorn Olesen, let the galleries GO! We're the ones who paid to be here, damn it. Everyone should start yelling, aggressively."

Another spectator, during that wait to cross the 16th fairway: "Release the HOUNDS!"

Woman, while trekking through mud: "Flip flops were a bad idea."

Man, analyzing Tiger's 6-footer from very, very far away: "It's a little left to right. If he drips it down he'll make it."

Spectator, noting the gallery has started walking to the next hole: "Yea, these people know Tiger has already sh*t the bed on this hole."

After Adam Scott's approach to the par-4 15th (second round) hit the green, then rolled way down to the fairway, guy says, "That's an 80-yard false front!"

Remarking on Tiger's 166-yard approach shot, spectator says, "That's a soft 8 with my new dy-no-MITE irons."

Man, watching Phil Mickelson walk down the 14th fairway: "Phil, you're taller in person. I dig it."

Spectator, after Mickelson knocks his approach onto the 15th green: "Is Phil not the greatest?" Spectator's buddy: "I actually think I'm in love with that man."

Mike Keiser gets land needed to create Bandon Muni

Mike Keiser isn't finished re-shaping Oregon's coast. The owner of Bandon Dunes, a five-course haven on the Southwest Coast of Oregon, now has his eyes set on a parcel of land located about 15 miles south of Bandon Dunes that would allow him to create a 27-hole municipal course.

After negotiating for a land swap with the Oregon State Parks Department for four years, Keiser met on Wednesday with Oregon's Governor and a representative of the Parks Department, and it's official: A preliminary agreement is in place that would give Keiser the land he needs to create the 27-hole Bandon Muni, which would, by the way, be designed by Gil Hanse. At the course, locals would play at a very low rate and juniors would basically pay nothing.

We all win.
