You might not have the flair of Ian Poulter to pull off wearing megawatt tartans like this, but don't rule out wearing plaid this fall. Many muted styles retain the classic look of plaid wearers like Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller and are mainstream enough for those who aren't as daring as Poulter.

Zanella, $295

Iconic Prince of Wales is the perfect pattern to dress up and add a dash of color to your outfit. For golf, keep it simple by pairing with a polo or sweater in the same color as one of the plaid's accent shades.

Rosasen, $130

The bolder the plaid, the younger its wearer. That's the general rule. If you have confidence in both your game and your sense of style, then these trousers with a little more attitude are right for you.

Polo golf, $195

Plaid can also be understated. Patterns colored in similar shades are a more conservative option that give the look of a solid, but add a little pizazz.
