Many muted styles retain the classic look of plaid wearers like Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller and are mainstream enough for those who aren't as daring as Poulter.

- Iconic Prince of Wales is the perfect pattern to dress up and add a dash of color to your outfit. For golf, keep it simple by pairing with a polo or sweater in the same color as one of the plaid's accent shades.

- The bolder the plaid, the younger its wearer. That's the general rule. If you have confidence in both your game and your sense of style, then these trousers with a little more attitude are right for you.
