The Hackel Award

A time for firsts in Augusta. South African Trevor Immelman won a green jacket AND our best-dressed at the Majors honor

May 5, 2008

Oh, how times are changing in golf. Sometimes what a PGA Tour player wears during a major championship can create as much buzz as how he performed in the tournament. It's in this spirit that Golf Digest created The Hackel award that I'll present to the most stylish golfer at some of the biggest events in professional golf. At the end of the year, I'll present a special award to the nattiest player who impressed me the most.

The first Hackel award goes to Trevor Immelman, not that he needs additional pats on the back for his Masters victory. As they say in South Africa, Veels Geluk mate! (that's Afrikaans for congratulations). Immelman might seem an obvious choice for The Hackel, being the Masters winner and all, but there's more to The Hackel than looking good in a green jacket. Immelman was already my style favorite after only the first round and by Sunday evening at the green jacket presentation, I knew who deserved The Hackel. Immelman combines athleticism with a casual elegance and proves you can look like a sportsman and a gentleman at the same time. Sure he's a pro, but examining his wardrobe offers plenty of good style advice for the everyday golfer.

Let's take a look at why Trevor looked so good:

Magazines / Thursday - Round One

What he wore: Nike Golf Tour Collection white sphere dry polo with olive detailing and khaki Dri-Fit flat-front tech pants and brown "jeans" belt paired with white and team red Nike Golf Air Tour TW 8.5 shoes

Why it worked: The first thing to notice about Immelman's look is that his clothes fit him. Properly. He's one of the best examples on tour today illustrating it's not what a guy wears, but how he wears it. Oversized polos do not make you a better golfer, but wearing shirts with shoulder seams that sit where they should and having the shirt properly tucked in can make a golfer appear in control.

Magazines / Friday - Round Two

What he wore: Tiger Woods Collection by Nike Golf UV debossed dark obsidian and sunburst polo with white Nike Golf Dri-Fit flat-front tech pants, signature swoosh-buckled white belt and white and black Nike Golf Air Tour TW 8.5 shoes.

Why it worked: Performance polos are the biggest thing to hit golf in years, and here Trevor wears one that's playful--but in a lesson we should all learn--it is not bolder than his game. Immelman isn't afraid of bright colors, but like he shows here, you've got to keep the athletic statement going and dress the body like a piece of golf equipment from head to toe.

Magazines / Saturday - Round Three

What he wore: Tiger Woods Collection by Nike Golf drop-needle polo in green bean and a black washable wool vest with Nike Golf Tour Collection black Dri-Fit flat-front tech pants and black "jeans" belt paired with black Nike Golf Air Tour TW 8.5 shoes.

Why it worked: My colleague, fashion editor Annmarie Dodd, pointed out in a recent edition of Golf World that green was the freshest color in the field at The Masters and Trevor does not disappoint. Another big trend this season shown here is the pairing of a mega-watt color against black. And pay attention to Immelman's vest; it's also not oversized, a fit that keeps his look sporty and elegant.

Magazines / Sunday - Round Four

What he wore: Nike Golf Tour Collection black Dri-Fit stretch polo with contrast collar stitching and a black washable wool vest with birch-colored flat-front tech pants and black Nike Golf Air Tour TW 8.5 shoes.

Why it worked: The Man in Black, 2.0. Gary Player wasn't in the gallery to see his protégé, but he was there in mind and spirit. The neutral combination of black and khaki is classic menswear and golf wear because it's comfortable to wear and appropriate in nearly every setting. Including the Butler Cabin.
