The Local Knowlege

Europe suddenly a fountain of youth

Shane Lowry of Ireland became the third player 22 or younger to win on the European PGA Tour this year and the second amateur to win with his overtime victory Sunday in the 3 Irish Open.

Lowry, 22, who was playing in his first professional tournament, was ranked 16th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Among those there to watch him close out the victory was his friend Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, 19, who won the Dubai Desert Classic earlier this year.

Danny Lee, 18, of New Zealand was the other amateur winner on the European PGA Tour, winning the Johnny Walker Classic in February.
