Tour says report on Couples was unfair

The PGA Tour has disputed a report on GolfDigest.com on March 28 that said tour officials were “afraid” to ask Fred Couples to come to the media center for an interview at the Shell Houston Open.

According to Ty Votaw, the PGA Tour’s Executive Vice President of Communications & International Affairs, officials agreed in advance to switch the interview to the driving range because Couples was arriving at the tournament on Wednesday morning, and had to rush to make his pro-am starting time.

“It’s an unfair characterization that we were afraid to ask,” said Votaw, “because that was untrue.”

The tour says it was accommodating to both the media and Couples. We regret that our report was misleading.
