Mr. Style, are you SERIOUS!!??
Friday, September 2, 2011
On his Mr. Style page in September's Golf Digest, Marty Hackel presented an outfit that included $240 Gant slacks, an $80 Brooks Brothers polo shirt, an $850 Tissot T-Race Moto GP watch and $245 Martin Dingman Sarasota loafers. This on a rakishly thin model who consumes half the fabric most of us do. It was not one reader's cup of tea--something we hear from you not infrequently.
What section of your readership is Mr. Style's story in the September issued aimed at? The complete cost of the outfit shown is $1703. I doubt that if 1 per cent of your readers could afford that. That's more than an annual single golf membership at some clubs. How about having Mr. Style present something for the average Joe, who is probably more typical of your readership.

Charlie, I can't argue that many of us are not considering $80 polos and $245 chinos. Not the way we play. However, Marty Hackel's page aims to present a look that's current with accessories that we might aspire to if not acquire. There are other ways to accomplish a similar look at a much lower price, we know. And you don't have to buy the whole kit.
What's more, Marty (along with our advertisers) knows, because he studies this stuff, that there's a large portion of our readership who will spend that kind of money without blinking. Not the millionaire next door, for sure.
