Reader: "Hey, you missed Old Works in Montana!"
Thursday, September 8, 2011
Just read Golf Digest's October 2011 issue, and I take issue with the course selection by Matt Rudy in "Big Sky Country." He missed a real gem in the Old Works course at Anaconda, MT, one of the best, and most unique, I've ever played.
FYI, I have played in all 50 states, and Old Works is one course among the many that clearly stands out. You should add it to your list.
As for his potential trip to Alaska, good luck. Remember that the Alaska growing season is so short, the course really don't get into shape until late July. I got seduced by the idea of playing at midnight, so made my trip in mid-June, and it was like early April here in the lower 48. I played in the Anchorage area, at O'Malley's (the Anchorage city course), at Eagleglen on Elmendorf AFB, at Moose Run Creek course on Ft Richardson, and at Settler's Bend in Wasilla (Sarah Palin's home town). The Anchorage course was really much tougher than slope and rating would indicate. Both military courses are open to the public, too.
Keep up the good work. Bob Ohm, Eldersburg, MD
Good work, Bob. That's a lot of golf! (Wasilla? Really?) We agree that Old Works is a strong Nicklaus design in a wonderful setting. We just couldn't cover them all in Matt's piece. Your fellow readers agree: It gets 4.5 stars of 5 in our
Places to Play ranking.
