Dave Anderson shines as PGA celebrates 95th
Thursday, September 1, 2011
The highlight of last night's celebration at the Martinique Hotel (now the Radisson Martinique) in Manhattan of the PGA of America's 95th anniversary was hearing Pulitzer Prize winner and Golf Digest Contributing Editor Dave Anderson of the Times take us sure-footedly through a history of the PGA and especially the PGA Championship in the New York area. (Several of those venues-- Pomonok C.C. and Salisbury Golf for example--are no longer with us). Anderson cleverly pointed out that the current obsession with "Tall Boys" on today's tour is really nothing new: Look at the winner of the inaugural PGA Championship, Long Jim Barnes, said Anderson. "He was the original Tall Boy."
Dave, who still writes for the Times and plays regularly at Knickerbocker in New Jersey, gave a tribute that was heartfelt and touching. "The tour pros are the
show of golf," said Dave. "But the club pros are the
soul of golf."
A room full of Met Section members said, "Amen."
