Champions Tour Match Play?

Gw20080404cover_sm In his "President Bill" column on March 14, Golf World's Bill Fields listed 15 things he'd do if he were "President of Golf." One was:

Install a Champions Tour match-play event.

Don Morton of Chesterfield, Missouri, likes the idea, with a caveat:

In 2001 the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Match Play Championship at Boone Valley Golf Club was not that successful after holding five great tournaments there for the seniors. Like any other match play event, many times unknowns end up playing on the final day(s). Maybe a better idea is one which Gary Player proposed three years ago during an interview with Peter Jacobsen. Let's have a full-field tournament event which combines players from the PGA Tour and Champions Tour with pairings and competition similar to the Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup or The Legends. Not only would this provide some interesting pairings but would also give the seniors an opportunity to pass on to many of the PGA Tour players the traditions of and responsibilities the younger players have to professional golf.

You had me with the event, but that passing-on-traditions-and-responsibilities....now you're reaching. It would be wonderful if it happened, of course. The Master of all such education is Arnold Palmer and Fields' piece on Arnie in Golf World's Masters section this week is a must-read.

Bill Fields for President

In the March 14 issue of Golf World columnist Bill Fields, with an audaciousness we're not used to, announced his candidacy for the presidency of golf. As his platform, Fields offered sensible solutions for slow play, present-day tour players' ignorance of the game's history, more access to our game for juniors, sensible directional signs, consistently colored tee markers, a Champions Tour match-play event, among other planks. Several of you quickly volunteered to be Fields Superdelegates!

A vote for "President Bill" Fields. Assuredly the BEST common sense golf article I've read in years. Bill's ideas re: The "Silly Season" event using 70's equipment is terrific, something I think we'd all enjoy watching, a great number of us having "learned" the game with these splendid tools.

Amen regarding Tee markers. (Designer colors ?)

Again YES pertaining to directional signs. Most seem to confuse more than help.

A Champions Match Play event would also be a great idea.

And finally, PLEASE bring back 150 yard stakes, bushes or trees. I've been saying the very same thing for years. Just for convenience sake and TIME savings, you can spot and gauge your distance SO much easier.

Thank you Bill for putting into publication, what a great many of us have been thinking.

PS. Perhaps Golf World could share this article with other currently popular golf publications. (Or maybe I should).

Great Stuff - keep it up!

Sarasota's Dick Leabo, also signed on for the ticket:

Bill Fields opinion column is on target! Bill said "Well, that is the first 100 days. Nothing to it." As an efficient President I would have thought he could do all he listed before lunch. Remember the Ross Perot cartoon?

Ross Perot? Hey, I voted for Ross Perot. But now I'm leaning toward Fields.

A Final Amen at Amen Corner

Bill Fields' terrific story on Herb Wind and Amen Corner in the Masters Section brought back memories for Peter Kaufman of New York City.

I had the privilege of taking a college course in Sports Journalism in the early 1970's, taught by Herbert Warren Wind. That resulted in once or twice a year lunches with Mr Wind for about twenty years or so, to my absolute delight.  The substance of the lunches was blessedly one-sided, as I always implored him to do pretty much all the talking while I did all the listening (with the occasional question tossed in).

Of this much I am certain: Mr Wind would have applauded the outing of his "mistake" regarding the musical provenance of the phrase "Amen Corner".  He treasured accuracy and precision in his incredibly textured and honed prose, and I cannot help but feel that Richard Moore's record-correction would have been rewarded  with one of Mr Wind's trademark broad smiles and a slight nod of the head.   Tough to get Higher approval than that!

I agree, Peter. I think Herb would have loved Bill's piece. It was the most respectful, laudatory correction in the history of magazines.

Understanding Bruce Crampton

Nice letter on Bill Fields' Bruce Crampton Backspin from former senior tour caddie Quinn Jerriey, now in Florida. Crampton won 20 times on that tour, seven as a rookie. Fields wrote, in part:

Of his stern expression, Crampton once said, "I just look like I'm going to chew somebody's ass out."

Once in a while, he did.

But existing beneath the outward edge was a battle with depression, made worse by the tournament

stress...

Writes Jerriey:

I was wondering when you would locate Bruce Crampton for your section.

Bruce was the best player of that era never to win a major. No one ever bothers to look at who finished second. How many times did Bruce finish second besides Jack?

I had the pleasure to caddie for Bruce on the Senior Tour for two years. He was misunderstood. When he walked on the range, this was like his day ?at the office? and it was just getting started. It was ?work?. No conversation except the business at hand. He had a very strong work ethic. He would work on his game after his round until dark. He played to win for both he and his caddie. He apologized when he handed you a lower check than others.

The one thing that many people didn?t know is that he always had a ?bag? full of jokes that he would share at the Pro Am?s with corporate sponsors and other amateurs playing with him. He enjoyed those rounds!
