The Masters Notebook

Seve in '77

Edited by Ron Kaspriske April 2009

Our cover boy for the April 1977 issue was a 19-year-old Spaniard named Seve Ballesteros. He was about to play in his first Masters (he finished T-33 that year) and would go on to win two green jackets, in '80 and '83.

Ballesteros is on our mind these days as he recovers from brain-cancer surgery. He's also the subject of an hourlong special on CBS before the final round at 1 p.m. EDT on April 12: "Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta: Seve at the Masters."
