How far does a golfer walk during a typical 18-hole round? For years the consensus has been about five miles (1,760 yards=one mile). How accurate is this? Furthermore, how far do golfers walk when they ride in a cart? What if the cartpaths-only rule is in effect? Do golfers who play from the forward tees walk less than those who play from the middle and back tees? Does a scratch golfer take fewer steps than a high-handicapper? To answer some of these questions, assistant editors Ashley Mayo and Jeff Patterson played several courses over several months and counted every step they took. See the results below:
